MOVIE TITLE:   The Last Breath

Welcome to Shark Week!  This mystery/thriller releases in theaters on July 26, 2024.

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  1 hour 36 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  B

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about a group of old college friends who reunite on a Caribbean scuba driving trip, exploring the wreckage of a WWII battleship.  When they find themselves trapped inside the underwater labyrinth of rusted metal, they discover they are surrounded by great white sharks.

The film was directed by Joachim Heden.  Writing credits go to Andrew Prendergast and Nick Saltrese.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The cast includes Julian Sands, Alexander Arnold, and Jack Parr.
  • The musical score lets you know immediately that this movie will be an intense thriller.
  • The sharks look pretty real.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • So many characters are so awful that you don’t mind it too much when they die.
  • Sometimes, it’s hard to understand what everyone is saying when they’re under the sea.
  • When everyone is in the ship at the bottom of the ocean, it’s very dark and difficult to see what’s going on clearly.
  • Lots of cliches like skeletons, lost love, stupid characters.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Profanity, including F-bombs
  • People get attacked by vicious sharks
  • We see chomped and bloodied body parts.
  • People die

THEMES:

  • Friendship
  • Survival
  • WWII history
  • Maritime war

FUNNY LINES:

  • “It’s like a nice, big bong hit.” – Bret
