The Mating Game movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   The Mating Game

This short nature series is now available on Discovery+

After being offered a press screener a few weeks ago, I finally had time to watch this!

RATING:  PG

LENGTH:

IN A NUTSHELL:

Who else could narrate a colorful series about the wild antics of the animal kingdom better than the wonderful Sir David Attenborough?  Well, maybe Morgan Freeman, but this is truly Attenborough’s territory where he rules supreme.  And speaking of territory, you’ll get to watch 5 parts of this series that show the great lengths male creatures go to in order to capture the attention of females to continue their species.

The documentary was filmed in 22 countries on six continents, featuring 880 different animal species who display amazing, intricate, and often hilarious rituals in the name of courtship, mating, and even love.

The privilege of reproduction is one that many animals are willing to pay with their own lives and who will go to extraordinary lengths in their desire to mate. Whether it be through thoughtful gestures, displays of power, deception, or impressive flamboyance, these interactions result in some of the most stunningly unique and shocking spectacles of wildlife on Earth.

#TheMatingGame is produced by the BBC, Discovery, and France Television.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I absolutely love Sir Attenborough’s humorous narration.
  • You’ll get to see some rare creatures in action like the tree frog in French Guiana, the Great Argus Pheasant, and digger bees in the Sonoran Desert.
  • It’s truly amazing to me how cinematographers ever get the amazing shots they do in nature.
  • Single guys out there might feel better when they see all of the energy and fighting other animal species have to go through to get a girl!  Asking a girl out on a date doesn’t seem so bad in comparison.
  • What’s especially fascinating is that there is so much we still don’t know about the animal kingdom and why various creatures behave the way they do.
  • It’s just another reminder of the marvelous splendor of this planet we live on.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Not everyone will enjoy watching the activities of all the creatures, such as the section about termites or spiders. It’s fascinating but…icky.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Be prepared. Kids are going to have questions!
  • Some animals fight.

THEMES:

  • Mating
  • Nature
  • Continuity of species
  • The circle of life
  • Persistence
  • Creativity
