MOVIE TITLE: The Misfits
(Not to be confused with the 1961 cowboy film of the same name with Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe.)
This movie premieres on June 11, 2021 in theaters and on VOD on June 15, 2021.
RATING: R
LENGTH: 1 hour 34 minutes
IN A NUTSHELL:
If you combine the Robin Hood story with modern-day action, you get this film. While it’s an entertaining summer flick, it’s also not very good.
THINGS I LIKED:
- Pierce Brosnan always provides British elegance to any movie he’s in.
- The also cast includes Jamie Chung, Tim Roth, Hermione Corfield, Nick Cannon, and Mike Angelo.
- There’s a lot of cheeky humor. In fact, Pierce Brosnan’s character states, “Don’t get cheeky with me.”
- There’s a lot of humor, both spoken and visual. Sometimes the jokes made me laugh out loud, while others made me roll my eyes in the style of “Oh, brother.” What I really appreciate about the film is that it’s self-aware. It recognizes some of its flaws and laughs at them with us.
- Fun fact: The desert scene was actually shot in a real sandstorm.
- We get to travel to Abu Dhabi and a few other fun locations.
- The musical score is energetic and quirky.
- It’s stylish and feels sophisticated with fancy cars, elegant surroundings, and expensive toys.
- You can tell China had a big influence on this film. Hollywood has really been trying to get into the extremely lucrative Chinese market lately. I’ve done a lot of business in China and traveled there many times, so I don’t mind. When I’m there for over a month, I love going to the theater to watch American movies that often premiere there before hitting the Big Screen in the USA.
- If you enjoy the movie, you’ll be happy to know that the ending gives us a hint that they’d like to make a sequel with these characters.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The first 20 minutes are all exposition, which is WAY too much time. It made me laugh when Pierce Brosnan’s character even mentions it by saying, “You’ve been explaining for an ungodly amount of time.” Ha ha
- The plot has holes and is even confusing, despite all of the explanations.
- The tone and pacing of the film are all over the place.
- There’s a LONG scene where a ton of people throw up. Ick. Seriously, it goes on and on and on. STOP!
- There are some black and white shots when characters and locations are being introduced in the story, but then they appear again in Acts 2 & 3 for some reason that didn’t make that much sense.
- There are a lot of “posing” shots to remind us how cool the Misfits are.
- The movie spends a lot of time trying to convince us it’s super cool and clever.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Profanity, including F-bombs
- Violence with blood
- Dishonesty, crime
- Portrayal of drug use and alcohol
- There’s talk of the Muslim Brotherhood
- Bad behavior is glamorized as being really cool.
THEMES:
- Crime
- Family
- The greater good
- Thinking outside the box
- Stealing from those who have and giving to those who have not
- Loyalty
FUNNY LINES:
- “Let’s focus on what we like about our work.” – Hope (Hermione Corfield) “Okay. I like to beat up people.” – Violet (Jamie Chung)
- “I don’t joke about Ringo.” – Ringo (Nick Cannon) “It’s better to just accept it and don’t Karaoke with him.” – Violet (Jamie Chung)
- “Are you crazy?” – Richard Pace (Pierce Brosnan) “Yeah, according to the authorities…and all standardized tests.” – Wick (Mike Pirat Nitipaisalkul)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “I decided a long time ago that if I can’t be good to one person, I’ll be good to lots of people.” – Violet (Jamie Chung)
- “I don’t date men. I kill them.” – Violet (Jamie Chung)
