IN A NUTSHELL:
The story is about Ingrid and Martha, who were close friends in their youth when they worked together at the same magazine. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. The movie is adapted from the 2020 novel “What Are You Going Through?” by Sigrid Nunez. You can find it on Amazon at https://amzn.to/41QaJDC
The film was directed by Pedro Almodovar, who also co-wrote it with Sigrid Nunez. This is Pedro’s first long feature film.
Already, the film has been nominated for 25 awards and won 3!

THINGS I LIKED:
- Talk about two powerhouses. Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton offer fantastic performances, as expected. They were both born in 1960.
- Other cast members include John Turturro, Alex Hogh Andersen, Victoria Luengo, and Esther McGregor.
- The film does an excellent job illustrating difficult conversations about death.
- The movie was filmed in New York, New Jersey, and even Spain.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Some have complained that the dialogue felt stiff and flat. I tend to agree.
- That sure is a lot to ask of a friend!
- The movie is very slow moving.
- There is quite a bit of talk of climate change.
- A lot of the dialogue feels preachy.
- I kept waiting for something to happen…at the very least, for someone to die.
- Considering the movie circled around a character’s impending death, I didn’t feel a strong emotional pull from the film. Surprising, right? The treatment of the topic felt more clinical than emotional.
