IN A NUTSHELL:
In an era when terrifying beasts roamed the seas, monster hunters were celebrated heroes — and none were more beloved than the great Jacob Holland. But when young Maisie Brumble stows away on his fabled ship, he’s saddled with an unexpected ally. Together they embark on an epic journey into uncharted waters and make history. From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chris Williams (Moana, Big Hero Six, Bolt), He also co-wrote the story with Nell Benjamin. The Sea Beast takes us to where the map ends, and the true adventure begins.
Netflix has successfully shown with this film that its animation department can compete with the likes of Disney and Pixar! After 200,000 of Netflix’s subscribers dropped their accounts in recent months, the company began scaling back on employees and projects. Hopefully, subscribers will appreciate the quality of this fun movie and reward Netflix.
THINGS I LIKED:
- First, the animation is absolutely fantastic. Water can be especially difficult to animate, so it was crucial that this nautical movie conquered the style. Mission accomplished. So many scenes are truly gorgeous. Sooo many great details in the visual design. I’m impressed.
- The fantastic cast includes delicious voices from Dan Stevens, Jared Harris, and Karl Urban. Additional stand-out cast members include Zaris-Angel Hator, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, and Kathy Burke.
- The design is extremely colorful and imaginative with many moments that will make you go “AAAAH!” and “AWWW!”
- The characters are endearing, perfectly flawed, and even relatable.
- The musical score works extremely well.
- You definitely feel like you’ve been on an adventure after watching the movie.
- Adults and kids of all ages will find plenty to like and laugh about in the story.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Some humor and lines will fly over the heads of young kids.
- I wanted to spend more time on the monster’s island! There was so much left unexplored there! Maybe we’ll get a sequel that gives us an opportunity to go back.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Sailors drink a lot of alcohol.
- People and creatures are in perilous situations
- Lots of destruction.
- Animated violence.
- We see creatures harmed and even killed.
THEMES:
- Thinking outside the box
- Courage
- History
- Truth
- Power and control
- Change
- Admitting you’re wrong
