MOVIE TITLE: Thor: Love and Thunder
RATING: PG-13
LENGTH: 2 hours 5 minutes
MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
Welcome back to the exciting world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! In this new addition, Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who intends to make the gods extinct.
This hilarious and fun movie was directed by the creative and playful Taika Waititi, as well as written by him with writing help by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Stan Lee gets writing credits for his visionary Marvel comics. Man, I miss seeing his cameos in Marvel movies.
THINGS I LIKED:
- Chris Hemsworth was made for this role. He’s bigger and badder than ever. His trainer, Luke Zocchi stated, “He is in phenomenal nick. He’s the biggest he has ever been. He’s the heaviest he’s ever been. This extent of musculature required Hemsworth to eat at least 8 times a day during the entire duration of filming just to maintain all the muscle mass he had acquired.” There’s a scene when we see Hemsworth completely naked from behind and shirtless from the front. Speaking about his physique, admiring Chris Pratt called Hemsworth a man-God. ha ha Chris Hemsworth’s son Tristan is seen in the movie as the young Thor.
- Who doesn’t love Thor? He has more stand-alone films than any other MCU character.
- The cast features five Oscar winners – Christian Bale, Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Taika Waititi, and Russell Crowe – and two Oscar nominees – Bradley Cooper and Melissa McCarthy.
- To catch everyone up to speed, an entertaining summary features video clips from Thor’s past movies, plus a few new ones to fill in the blanks.
- Wow, I didn’t even recognize Christian Bale until he started to speak! Initially, he turned down the role but his kids begged him to do it. His performance is exceptional and what takes the parody style of the movie into an Avenger battle.
- It’s so great to see the beautiful and talented Natalie Portman again. She looks amazing.
- I adore the Guardians of the Galaxy, so I loved their inclusion in this story.
- So much humor, both visual and spoken.
- Fun, rocking soundtrack.
- So many fun cameos like Matt Damon, Melissa McCarthy, and…no more spoilers.
- Lots of flashbacks and fun Easter Eggs for true MCU fans.
- As with all MCU films, keep watching during the final rolling credits for another scene and sneak peek at what’s to come.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Not all of the humor lands. In fact, some of the cheap and quirky jokes get in the way of developing a powerful movie. Overall, the movie feels like a goof-fest and even a little embarrassing.
- What the heck was that accent supposed to be for Zeus? Russell Crowe’s portrayal was way too silly and even disrespectful for the all-powerful Zeus.
- Christian Bale’s character was interesting and completely underutilized. Korg had more screen time and lines than the villain in the film. Bad move.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Some profanity
- Lesbian references
- Superhero violence.
- Various kinds of weapons were used.
- People die.
THEMES:
- Love and loss
- Purpose in life
- Self-discovery
- Friendship
- Loyalty
INTERESTING LINES:
* “If you ever feel lost, just look in the eyes of the people you love and they’ll tell you who you are.” – (Chris Pratt)
- “Love is pain.” – (Christian Bale)
- “Keep your heart open.” – Jane (Natalie Portman)
