MOVIE TITLE: Madea Homecoming
This new installment in the Madea franchise is now available on Netflix.
RATING: TV-MA (rated R equivalent) This is the first Madea film to be rated R.
LENGTH: 1 hour 45 minutes
IN A NUTSHELL:
Tyler Perry wrote, directed, and stars in this silly family feud. Madea’s back, hallelujer. And she’s not putting up with any nonsense as family drama erupts at her great-grandson’s college graduation celebration. This is the 12th addition to the Madea franchise. If you love Madea, this is more of the same. If you don’t know her or don’t like her, you should definitely skip this one.
THINGS I LIKED:
- Tyler Perry said he retired the Madea character, but he loves her too much to say goodbye. He does a great job playing the goofy, fast-talking matriarch.
- Comedian Brendan O’Carroll matches Tyler Perry’s gender-swapping role as the funny Agnes Brown.
- There are a lot of lines that have references to Beyonce songs. The title is a play on Beyonce’s Coachella show she called “Homecoming”.
- Madea actually shares some good wisdom on love and marriage.
- There are a couple of big reveals that provide plenty of conversations for the characters to work through.
- Keep watching during the rolling credits at the end to see a musical number in honor of guess who? Beyonce, of course.
- There are a few creative transitions, but the film isn’t consistent in using them.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The humor is over-the-top slapstick, vulgar, and low-brow.
- The story is all over the place.
- Some surprisingly bad acting moments.
- Really dumb dialogue and script.
- The characters are one-note and one-dimensional.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- TONS of profanity including the “N” word and other racial slurs and crude comments
- Talk and consumption of weed
- Madea has and uses several firearms
- Talk of homosexuality
- Lots of political jokes that kids won’t understand
- Negative talk about the police
- Woke humor
- Violence
THEMES:
- Family
- Education
- Talk of defunding the police
- Disrespect
- Unconditional love
- Divorce
- Sacrifice for others
- Closed minds
- Secrets
FUNNY LINES:
* “You’re so wise.” – Laura (Gabrielle Dennis) “I know. It’s the weed.” – Madea (Tyler Perry)
INTERESTING LINES:
- “Sometimes you gotta take a chance on love. Love is worth it.” – Madea (Tyler Perry)
- “Love is worth fighting for.” – Madea (Tyler Perry)
