MOVIE TITLE: UglyDolls
ON Disc and Streaming: July 30, 2019
RATING: PG
LENGTH: 1 hour, 27 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
If you’ve seen the Hasbro Uglydolls in stores, you might be surprised that they actually made a feature film out of them. This colorful, animated movie has quite a few powerful messages for kids and adults. It’s sugary sweet and family-friendly. It’s definitely not as magical as any of the Toy Story films, but it’s still worth seeing for younger kids.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Spend time talking to your kids about the messages in this movie. We all feel ugly from time to time.
- No profanity
- Champagne on a table
- Joke about butts
- Some doll violence.
- Bullying
- Dolls in peril. I feel silly writing that sentence.
THEMES:
- Friendship
- Dreams, hope
- Believe in yourself, accept yourself
- Love
- Fitting in
- Everyone is unique and special
- Physical appearance vs. internal beauty
- Perfection vs. being unique
- Never give up
- “Our flaws make us who we are.” – Moxy (Kelly Clarkson)
- “Believe in the you that you see.” – from a song
- Embrace imperfection and all of your “messy bits.”
THINGS I LIKED:
- Kelly Clarkson is totally adorable as the voice of the ever-optimistic Moxy. Fans of THE VOICE will love watching a movie with both Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton. You can watch them together in The Complete Season 14 Collection (The Voice Performance) She is a much better actor than he is and she also does the bulk of the singing in the movie.
- Nick Jonas is great as the villain. Other musical artists in the movie are Pitbull, Ice-T, and Janelle Monae.
- Other voice talents include Emma Roberts, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, Rob Riggle, Leehom Wang, and Gabriel Iglesias.
- The music is fun with cute lyrics. Your kids might actually ask for the soundtrack. I really liked the song Unbreakable . Here’s the link for the soundtrack: UglyDolls (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) My favorite song from the movie is Broken & Beautiful (from the movie UGLYDOLLS)
- “Dollscaping.” ha ha
- Yes, this movie is about merchandising. Uglydolls have actually been seen in cameos in movies like Enchanted, the 2011 The Smurfs, Zathura, and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium.
- There is some humor for parents, which parents definitely appreciate if they have to sit through the movie with their kids.
- I loved how the teeth on the little girl matched Moxy’s in the end.
- The end credits were really cute how they coordinated kids with dolls. No need to watch all of the credits though; there isn’t anything at the very end.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- It’s pretty predictable.
- Some of the edited transitions are abrupt.
- The song “Getting All Dolled Up” seemed to teach contradictory lessons: be who you are but you should make changes. ???
FUNNY LINES:
* “I’m an individual exactly like the rest of them.” – boy doll
INTERESTING LINES:
* “Pretty makes perfect.” – Lou (Nick Jonas)
