LENGTH:       1 hour 38 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:    C+

IN A NUTSHELL:

Two jaded Singles meet at a wedding.  The story was written by Keith Bunin, and directed by Peter Hutchings.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The film features Lucy Hale and Nat Wolf as the couple. The camera and makeup teams did a great job making them look younger in the flashbacks.
  • There IS something magical about being able to reveal and reflect on your past with a complete stranger. I’ve done that several times on long airplane flights.  Knowing or thinking you’ll never see that person again allows you to open up in a unique way that can be therapeutic.
  • I loved the creative ways to visually show flashbacks.
  • We hear a beautiful performance of “It Had to Be You” by Britne Oldford.
  • Lovely music by Spencer David Hutchings.
  • In the beginning, I was turned off by the shallow characters and their focus on sex, but they grew on me and I liked the ending that showed they had learned to value depth, forgiveness, lessons learned along the way, and relationships.
  • The film shows how we need to offer grace and forgiveness to ourselves for making mistakes, as well as extend the same patience with others. We’re all just trying to figure out life and love.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • I love a good rom-com, but I don’t think one-night hook-ups are romantic, charming, or funny. I am way too old-fashioned; I want substance.
  • Really? Do girls get all ticked off when a stranger doesn’t want to have spontaneous sex with them in a coat closet at an event?  If that’s what young women are like today, our world is in serious trouble.
  • The dialogue isn’t as clever or witty as it thinks it is. Most of the conversations are about sex.
  • Did anyone notice that all of the single women in the movie wear a wedding ring on their left hand? What’s that all about?
  • Why do rom-coms always think it’s cute to show a couple trespassing or breaking the law?

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored.
  • Profanity, including F-bombs.
  • A young woman gets drunk
  • We see lots of unmarried people sleeping together
  • Lots of talk and portrayal of hookups (we see a side shot of a topless woman, sound effects, and movement)

THEMES:

  • Relationships
  • Honesty
  • Forgiving yourself for past mistakes
  • Judging others
  • Flawed, wounded characters
  • Hope for a better relationship despite past heartbreaks

FUNNY LINES:

  • “It was partly a great teenage romance and partly a series of misdemeanors.” – Jane  (Lucy Hale)
  • “I’m not proud of any of this.” – Will (Nat Wolff)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Clear thinking is really over-rated.” – Will  (Nat Wolff)
  • “You get hurt the most by people you think couldn’t possibly hurt you.” – Jane (Lucy Hale)
  • “This is different.” – Jane (Lucy Hale)
