MOVIE TITLE:   Worldbreaker (2026)

This dramatic, dystopian, alien thriller hits theaters on January 30th.

RATING:  PG-13 (for intense sci-fi action, peril, and thematic elements)

LENGTH:  1 hour 34 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  B-

IN A NUTSHELL:

Worldbreaker is an emotional science fiction thriller that explores what happens when humanity has to fight for control and survival. Starring Luke Evans in a commanding lead role, the film blends large-scale action with moral questions about responsibility, family, and sacrifice. With impressive visuals and tense moments, Worldbreaker also asks viewers to consider what truly makes a world worth saving.

After aliens attack the world, a father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he trains her for survival and the inevitable battles ahead.

The film was directed by Brad Anderson. Writing credits go to Joshua Rollins.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

This film is best suited for teens and adults. There are intense action sequences, frequent danger, and themes involving global catastrophe.

  • Some scary images of monsters attacking and being killed (people die too)
  • Some blood and gore
  • Swords, guns, and violence

THEMES:

  • Hope

  • Father/daughter relationship, and the importance of family

  • Courage during fear
  • Trust
  • Sacrifice for the greater good
  • Survival

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Luke Evans delivers a strong, grounded performance that anchors the film emotionally. He can do it all: drama, singing, dancing, comedy! (He only does the drama in this movie, though.)

  • Milla Jovovich was the perfect actress to cast in this role as a tough warrior. She’s believable because we know she can get evil butt from her role in the popular Resident Evil franchise!  Sadly, she doesn’t get very much screen time, certainly not enough for her fans. She and Luke Evans previously starred together in the 2011 movie The Three Musketeers.
  • The two young girls are played by Billie Boullet and Mila Harris.
  • Big, cinematic visuals that feel worthy of the big screen. You’ll just wish there were more big moments.

  • The film has a very serious tone with thought-provoking themes beneath the action.

  • The monster “breakers” and hybrids are interesting, but they don’t get enough screen time. The hybrids have this creepy laugh, which makes them unique and intriguing.
  • I loved the explanation that the aliens kill men quickly because their brains are simple and easily infected, while the synapses in women’s brains are much more complex. My favorite explanation of that truth is found in an extremely entertaining and enlightening lecture called “A Tale of Two Brains”. You can see watch a clip of it on YouTube at: https://youtu.be/29JPnJSmDs0?si=97kgd-pp9D9wQs6m
  • We get to spend time in the Irish islands.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The pacing slows in the middle with heavy exposition.

  • Is there anything more annoying than a know-it-all, entitled teenage girl who has no concept of consequences?
  • A few plot points rely on familiar sci-fi tropes.
  • The dark tone may feel relentless for some viewers.

  • Some viewers might not like the ambiguous ending.

FUNNY LINES:

There are very few laugh-out-loud moments. This film takes itself seriously, but a couple of dry one-liners briefly cut the tension.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “This world has been broken many times. And the breakers are always different.” –   Dad (Luke Evans)
  • “Death is always followed by rebirth.” –   Dad     (Luke Evans)
  • “My dad is a born storyteller. He says our stories are as important as our guns and swords, especially now. Stories give those of us, that are still left, hope. They inspire our warriors, like my mom, to keep fighting.” –   Willa  (Billie Boullet)
  • “You can be afraid, but you can’t let it stop you. Let what scares you, move you forward.” –   Mom  (Milla Jovovich)
  • “When I look at you, I’m reminded.”  – Dad        “Of what?” – Willa    “Hope.” – Dad
  • “Life’s little pleasures…” – Dad
