Johnny English Strikes Again movie review

Movie Title:   Johnny English Strikes Again

Grade:   B

Rating: PG 1 hour 28 minutes

In a Nutshell:   Slapsticky and silly, Johnny English gives you exactly what you would expect in this family-friendly film.  If you’re already a fan of Rowan Atkinson, you’ll get a kick out of this third and, supposedly, last installment in the franchise.

Tips for parents:

  • Some profanity.
  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Some subtitles to read quickly.
  • Cleavage.
  • You see a man’s naked rear end.
  • Some violence.

Uplifting theme:

  • Persistence
  • Loyalty

Things I liked:

  • Emma Thompson!  Yes!  I love her in anything and everything.
  • I thought the scene towards the beginning where Johnny English is training the young kids was pretty funny.  The ending was pretty cute too and wrapped up the story nicely.
  • Lots of fun spy gadgets.
  • That virtual reality floor was pretty cool.  I’ve never seen that before!  It sure beats crashing into the walls when I’ve played VR games before!
  • Awesome 3D gun.
  • It’s fun to see Olga Kurylenko in this movie, since she also starred as the main James Bond girl in Quantum of Solace.
  • Ben Miller is a sweet and loyal sidekick as Bough.  What kind of name is that anyway?

Things I didn’t like:

  • There are a few scenes that are dark at night, which will make it hard to see what’s going on if you watch this on a computer screen or small TV once the movie goes to streaming.
  • I much prefer Johnny English over the ridiculous Mr. Bean: The Whole Bean (Complete Series).  There are a few Mr. Bean-ish moments in this movie.  How could Rowan Atkinson resist?

Funny lines:

  • You’re looking particularly beautiful tonight.  Ching!” – Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson)
  • “Vodka tonic!  No ice.  No tonic!” – Prime Minister  (Emma Thompson)
  • “I’m not sure I’ve ever met a man like you.” –  Ophelia (Olga Kurylenko)

“Let me clear up the uncertainty for you.  You haven’t.” – Johnny English.

  • “I like to keep things simple.” – Ophelia

“Simple is my middle name.” – Johnny English
