The Munsters movie review

MOVIE TITLE:     The Munsters

Timed perfectly to kick-start this year’s Halloween season, the Munsters premieres exclusively on Netflix on September 27, 2022.

RATING:    PG    This is Rob Zombie’s first movie to NOT be rated R.

LENGTH:      1 hour 49 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  C-

IN A NUTSHELL:

This is Rob Zombie’s reboot of the popular TV show The Munsters with a focus on the origin story of the monstrous, married couple of the series.    In that regard, you could call this a movie prequel.

Hard-rock icon Rob Zombie wrote the screenplay, directed, and produced the film.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Jeff Daniel Phillips does a great job as Herman Munster.  He also plays Zombo, and Shecky Von Rathbone.
  • Sheri Moon Zombie, the director’s wife, plays Lily Munster.  Needless to say, she and her husband are big fans of The Munsters TV show.
  • It’s been a while since I’ve seen Jorge Garcia in anything, so it was fun to see him again.
  • This film serves as an origin story of the famous, ghoulish couple and their romantic relationship.
  • Pat Priest has a cameo performance in the movie.  She originally played Marilyn Munster in 1964.  She also had a cameo spot in the 1995 film Here Come the Munsters in 1995.
  • The director chose to light the movie in a heightened color palette so the characters would look like a live-action cartoon.
  • The teaser trailer created a shot-by-shot remake of the original title sequence in the 1964 TV show.
  • It’s colorful and goofy fun.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Even though they spent $40 million on this comedy based on the popular TV show in the 1960s, it’s a huge disappointment and looks low-budget.
  • It’s easy to spot the humor the director was going for, but it mostly lands flat.
  • This is the first time Eddie Munster has not been a part of a Munster movie.
  • Everything just felt over-acted, super cheesy, and ridiculous.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • A lot of scary, creepy images
  • Some suggestive material not appropriate for kids
  • Some profanity
  • Some violence

THEMES:

  • Romance
  • Non-conformity and the definition of “normal”
  • Family
