MOVIE TITLE:     Catering Christmas

This romantic comedy is now available to stream online.

RATING:    PG

LENGTH:      1 hour 26 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:     B

IN A NUTSHELL:

What’s Christmas without a cheesy romance movie set in a holiday mood?  Hallmark sure knows their audience and pumps out dozens every December, but now we have GAF stepping up its game by delivering this Christmas romance.  Originally known as the Great American Country (GAC) company, it’s now “Great American Family”, offering family-friendly movies and TV shows.

The story is about Molly Frost, a struggling, new catering business owner who lands a big job for a prestigious event in New Hampshire.  Can you taste the romance?  If not, you’ll, at least, be in the mood to bake some Christmas cookies!

The film was written by Cara J. Russell, and directed by T. W. Peacocke.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The leading couple is played nicely by Merritt Patterson and Daniel Lissing.  Their chemistry was believable and I wanted them to get together.
  • The other main actors in the movie are Michael Hanrahan and Rosemary Dunsmore.  What I liked about the cast is that they all seemed pretty natural.  Overacting in this kind of movie happens often but didn’t this time.  Yay.
  • We want to see lots of beautiful Christmas décor and scrumptious-looking food.  Mission accomplished.
  • The movie feels like comfort food: nothing super fancy but it makes you feel good.
  • It’s nice to see a romantic story with old and young couples.
  • The dialogue felt pretty realistic and authentic.
  • The names of Hallmark-type characters always crack me up.  Molly FROST is featured as the cute caterer in this movie.
  • I wouldn’t call this movie a rom-com, as there isn’t really anything that made me laugh out loud.
  • If you’ve seen a lot of other romance movies like this, you’ll probably recognize the town and other sets that are used in various scenes.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There is nothing new about the plot: wealthy, beautiful people stumble upon a hard-working girl who helps them with something important.  Love ensues.
  • In other words, the movie is extremely predictable, but you still can’t help but enjoy the holiday spirit that oozes in every scene.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Unmarried couples kiss.
  • No profanity.
  • Nothing offensive.

THEMES:

  • Traditions
  • Legacy
  • Christmas food
  • Romance
  • Being on the same page with your partner
  • Entrepreneurial determination

FUNNY LINES:

None with noting.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “In my experience, the 3 C’s of a healthy relationship are communication, commitment, and compromise.” –  Kyle Frost  (R. Austin Ball)
  • “Food is more than just food.” –  Carson Jacob Harrison  (Daniel Lissing)
  • “Everyone wants to know that what they do matters.  It gives our life meaning.  But it’s up to you to determine what that should be.” –  Robert   (Michael Hanrahan)
