MOVIE TITLE:  Anna

RATING: R

LENGTH:   1 hour, 59 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Director Luc Besson seems to specialize in femme fatales, casting former models like Cara Delevigne, Milla Jovovich, Kate Nauta, Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek in movies like LucyValerian and the City of A Thousand Planets [DVD]The Fifth Element, Bandidas and Transporter 2.  Sasha Luss is the next beauty to become a deadly assassin in this film.

Some say this movie is a remake of La Femme Nikita.  It might be fun to see Anna meet John Wick.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Some profanity, including F-bombs.
  • A quick scene of a three-way, although everyone has underwear on. Another scene shows the face of a woman during another “encounter.”
  • Russian is spoken with English subtitles.
  • A woman slits her wrists and starts to bleed out
  • Lesbians kiss.
  • Lots of violence and gory deaths.
  • You see a naked woman from behind.  Later, you see her topless profile.
  • A woman “sleeps” with a lot of people.

THEMES:

  • “Your life was a gift.” – Alex Tchenkov
  • “Adversity is a good teacher.” – Olga (Helen Mirren)
  • Always check your equipment.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The intriguing beginning caught my attention.
  • Sasha Luss is lovely and jumped from a small role in Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets [DVD] to the starring role in this movie.  She does a great job and we’re sure to see more of her in future movies.
  • The talented cast includes Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy, and the national treasure that is Helen Mirren.
  • I’m a sucker for spy double-crosses and triple-crosses.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The timeline jumps around and cand be confusing.  Math is involved.  ha ha
  • You have to wait 38 minutes to see an action scene with Anna.
  • While there is a lot of action in the last 1 1/2 hours of the movie, there aren’t any moves we haven’t already seen a million times before.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “I was just young and stupid.” – Anna

“Tell me someone who wasn’t.” – Nikka  (Anna Krippa)

  • “A certain amount of anger can be useful.” – Alex Tchenkov  (Luke Evans)
  • “You’re a blank key, which means you have the ability to open many doors.” – Alex Tchenkov
