Spider-Man Far From Home movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   Spider-Man: Far From Home

RATING: PG-13

LENGTH:  2 hours, 9 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  A

IN A NUTSHELL:

FOS Unite!  (Friends of Spider-Man)  Welcome to the post-Avengers Endgame world.  After the last two very dramatic Avengers movies, Spider-Man saves the day by giving us an easy, breezy, light and fun summer popcorn movie.  Spider-Man Far From Home is the final movie in the Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the sequel to the 2017 Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Tom Holland recently said that this new Spider-Man movie is a “token of our love” to Robert Downey Jr. and his Iron Man character.  Awww.  There is cute and funny “In Memorium” at the beginning of the movie.

This new addition to the superhero franchise has a very youthful energy.  I got to see a press screening of the movie with an audience that was clearly filled with fans.  Everyone left energized and laughing.  It was directed by Jon Watts, and written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.  Stay sticky!

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Some profanity, always by Samuel L. Jackson (of course)
  • There is a crude reference to the “Peter tingle” that will, hopefully, fly over the heads of young viewers, although it’s repeated quite a few times
  • Someone hits a boy in the crotch and runs away.
  • A boy starts to undress in front of a girl…twice.
  • A boy flips the bird (the middle finger) at another boy
  • A teenage boy gets invited to a bar, but he just drinks lemonade.”
  • There is talk of a teenage boy watching an “adult” film.
  • Violence, destruction, people in peril

THEMES:

  • Illusion vs. reality
  • Growing up
  • Taking responsibility
  • “The choice is yours.” – Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)

THINGS I LIKED:

    • I really like Tom Holland as Spider-Man.  I love his enthusiastic, naive youthfulness and energy.
    • Jake Gyllenhaal is awesome.  I love him in everything he does.  He does a great job with his character and is one of the most talented actors in Hollywood today, in my humble opinion. Check out my movie review of his recent film Wildlife.
    • The talented cast includes Zendaya, Jon Favreau, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Marisa Tomei, and more!
    • Marvel has quickly learned that audiences want wonder, action, a flawed hero, and lots of humor.  This movie has it all.
    • There are a LOT of Easter Eggs, if you can catch them. For example, Peter’s suitcase has the letters “BFP” written on it, referring to his uncle Benjamin Franklin Parker.  Check out information on passports, license plates, and various items.
    • There’s a cute reference to Captain America: The First Avenger and his shield.
    • The song choices were perfect and hilarious.
    • There’s a fun cameo at the end of the movie that I’m not going to ruin for you, but the audience cheered the minute his face showed up on the screen.
    • If you loved Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (who didn’t?), there are scenes in this movie that have a similar comic book feel to it.
    • I absolutely love how the MCU successfully ties all of their movies together.
    • If you love to travel, you’ll get to see Mexico, Venice, the Austrian mountains, Prague, London, the Netherlands, and…Queens.
    • Social Justice Warriors will love the diverse cast.
    • The night monkey.   ha ha  You KNOW people are going to dress up as that for Halloween this year.  We’re probably also going to see a lot of people wearing the funny Find X I Found It T-Shirt funny Math pun t-shirt T-shirt Peter Parker wore early in the movie.

  • If you’re a TRUE Marvel’s The Avengers fan, you already know that you HAVE to stay in your seat in the theater and keep watching until the end credits.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • You really need to have seen Spider-Man: Homecoming and the last two Avengers movies to truly understand the depth of what’s happening with some of the characters.  You especially need to have seen Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame.  There is talk of the “blip” and what happened afterward.
  • Some of the action sequences looked like they were designed to be in the video games.
  • Some of the CGI looked pretty fake, especially the fire.
  • Audiences may miss the significance of the Black Dahilia…like the murder.
  • That stealth suit looked like it had some black ops special powers, but I was underwhelmed.
  • Unfortunately, Peter Parker and MJ don’t have a lot of chemistry together.

FUNNY LINES:

* “Europeans love Americans.” – Ned (Jacob Batalon)

  • “Did I ever tell you how my wife pretended to blip out?” – Mr. Harrington (Martin Starr)
  • “It’s like the anti-Aloha.  I was born to say this word.” – Michelle Jones/MJ (Zendaya)
  • “I can help!  I’m really strong and I’m sticky!” – Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland)
  • You should definitely believe everything you read on the internet.” – MJ
  • “Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.  Stark said you wouldn’t get that because it’s not a Star Wars reference.” – Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson)
  • “Thor was a myth and now I study him in my physics class.” – Peter Parker
  • “Edith stands for ‘Even Dead I’m The Hero.'”
  • “You guys do have sarcasm on this earth, right?” – Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal)
  • “I would totally kiss you right now but I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.” – Betty (Angourie Rice)     “I think I have a mint.” – Ned
  • “The news never lies.” – Peter Parker
  • “You take care of the suite.  I’ll take care of the music.” – Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “People believe, and nowadays, they’ll believe anything.” – Mysterio
  • “You look really pretty.” – Peter Parker       “Therefore I have value?” – MJ
  • “It’s easy to fool people when they’re already fooling themselves.” – Mysterio
