IN A NUTSHELL:
Kevin James returns to what he does best: playing a well-meaning, slightly clueless man thrown into circumstances far beyond his comfort zone. Solo Mio is light, predictable fun that leans more on charm than originality.
The film was directed by Charles Francis Kinnane and Daniel Kinnane. But wait, that’s not all of the Kinnane brothers! All eight of them work on this movie in a variety of roles!
The story is about a wedding disaster that leaves the groom stranded in Rome, heartbroken in the world’s happiest city. But with one determined local and a few meddling vacation couples in his corner, his ruined honeymoon becomes an adventure he never expected. Sometimes, heartbreak is just the first chapter of a better story. The movie was written by Kevin James himself, as well as John Kinnane and Patrick Kinnane.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:
This film is generally safe for teens and adults, but parents should be aware of some mild language, crude humor, and situational comedy involving alcohol and awkward romantic moments. Nothing is graphic, but younger viewers may miss the humor or feel uncomfortable with a few adult jokes.
- Kissing
- Kids will have to read cell phone texts and some subtitles.
- Lots of alcohol. People get drunk in several scenes.

THEMES:
• Stepping outside your comfort zone
• Finding purpose later in life
• Embracing change
• Self-discovery through unexpected relationships
• Learning to laugh at yourself

THINGS I LIKED:
- Kevin James’ physical comedy is front and center. He also helped produce the film and screenwrite it! I’ve been such a fan for years. If you like him, you’ll get a kick out of this movie. There is something so charming about Kevin James that you always want to root for him to be happy and successful. That’s true in this film too.
- Other cast members include Alyson Hannigan, Nicole Grimaudo, Kim Coates, and Jonathan Roumie.
- We get to spend time in gorgeous Italy! The cinematography captures the true beauty and magic of the city. I love Italy so much and have been there multiple times. I got to take my youngest son with me just last May. He absolutely LOVED it, and it was so fun watching him fall in love with Rome like I do every time I go there. He’s a history buff, so he and I are writing a book about Rome and Christ’s connection to the eternal city that will come out this year! You can find all 35 of my books on Amazon, as well as in some bookstores (my shameless plug).
- We also get to spend time in Sienna in the film, which is an extremely charming medieval city I spent time in several years ago. It’s famous for the annual Palio (horse race). I love that each of the neighborhoods sponsors a horse each year and has their own unique flag, costumes, and design motif that is all over their streets and walls. It’s such a fun way to build community spirit in the town. In the movie, you’ll see the high tower in the plaza where they hold the race, which tourists are allowed to climb when they visit! What a delightful town!
- We get some awesome cameo appearances from people you’ll love. No spoilers!
- Several genuinely laugh-out-loud moments.
- The film shows quite a few characters who experience personal growth.
- The music is a nice mix of American/English songs and Italian.
- Keep watching during the final rolling credits to see some more cute scenes.
- Fun fact: All of the school scenes were filmed in Deer Park, Long Island.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- The plot is my biggest complaint. What kind of woman runs a cafe and then spontaneously leaves in the middle of the day to go hang out with a complete stranger who doesn’t speak her language? Don’t get me wrong though…I think the actress Nicole Grimaudo is absolutely darling.
- What does it say about a man who was so madly in love with a woman that he was prepared to marry her, only to fall in love with another woman 2 days later?
- So many scenes feature a bunch of people talking over each other, which is classic Italian, but also a bit annoying.
- It wasn’t as funny as I had hoped. There is more physical humor than clever writing.
- Predictable story beats.
- Some jokes feel recycled from earlier Kevin James films.
- The pacing slows in the middle.
- Sadly, there are some missed opportunities to go deeper emotionally.

FUNNY LINES:
“I came here to find myself… but I think I lost my luggage instead.” – Matt (Kevin James)
“I’m trying to be funny.” – Matt (Kevin James) “Keep trying.” – Gia (Nicole Grimaudo)

INTERESTING LINES:
“Sometimes being alone is the only way to hear what your life has been trying to tell you.”
“It’s okay to not be okay.” – Donna (Julee Cerda)
