Gemini Man movie review

MOVIE TITLE:       Gemini Man

RATING:    PG-13

LENGTH:     1 hour, 57 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:    A-

IN A NUTSHELL:

This movie spent a very long time in production…as in 20 years! Disney was going to produce it but computer effects at the time weren’t quite up to the task.  The technical innovations were worth the wait, but the story could have used some more time to work out.  As the name Gemini Man suggests, an assassin is cloned

This film is not related to the old TV show of the same name back in 1976.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Some profanity, including 1 F-bomb
  • People in peril.  Some die.
  • Destruction, violence
  • A woman strips down to her underwear.  You see the top half of her in a bra.
  • A fascinating topic of conversation for your family to have after watching this movie together:  If you could meet your future self, what would you want to know?  What questions would you ask?

THEMES:

  • Identity
  • Loyalty
  • Friendship
  • Truth
  • Choice
  • Perfection
  • Humanity

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Impressive anti-aging visuals with Will Smith.  The young Will Smith looked soooo real.  He gives a strong performance, young and old.
  • Wow, the filming of that motorcycle scene was super impressive.
  • Another scene that was technically impressive was the fight scene between Will Smith and…himself.
  • Jaden Smith’s son “Icon” is featured in the second trailer that was released for the movie. Jaden is Will Smith’s son.
  • Impressive stunt work.
  • Some scenes were shot in Savannah, Georgia and Cartegena, Colombia.
  • The talented cast includes mainly Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong.
  • Ang Lee, who directed the fantastic Life of Pi also directed this movie, which is impressive because they’re totally different from one another.  I really enjoyed Life of Pi
  • As an identical twin, I get a kick out of clone movies.  ha ha
  • I saw a twist coming but it was still fun when it arrived.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Fans of Game of Thrones: S8 (DVD) who were disappointed by the sloppy writing in Season 8 won’t be surprised that this was also written by David Beinoff.
  • If you’ve seen the trailer, then you’ve pretty much seen the movie.
  • The characters are pretty flat.
  • Some of the stunts look like fake video games.  Either that or they’re insanely good.  I couldn’t quite tell sometimes.
  • Some of the dialogue wasn’t very good.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “My government lied to me and then tried to kill me, if that’s what you mean.” –  Henry Brogan   (Will Smith)

“In Russia, we call that Tuesday, but you Americans…it hurts your feelings.” –   Russian spy

  • “Everyone hates cilantro.” –     Junior   (Will Smith)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Scared is good. It means you’re alert.” –  Henry Brogan    (Will Smith)
  • “Caution has kept me alive.” – Henry
  • “I need to get some sleep.” – Danny Zakarweski   (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)            “Not me.  That’s where the ghosts are.” – Henry
  • “He’s your darkness.  You have to walk through this alone.” – Clay Verris    (Clive Owen)
  • “Don’t doubt, Junior.  You’re better than that.” – Clay
  • “Don’t let yourself down.” – Clay
  • “There is no perfect version of me or him or anybody.” – Henry
