MOVIE TITLE: Black and Blue
RATING: R
LENGTH: 1 hour, 38 minutes
Movie Review Mom GRADE: B
IN A NUTSHELL:
Written by Peter A. Dowling and directed by Deon Taylor, this cat and mouse thriller addresses loyalties between being African American and a cop. While covering issues like loyalty and racism, the dramatic movie is suspenseful, culturally aware, and brave enough to shine the spotlight on ugliness, cowardice, and corruption. While the story isn’t entirely unique, it’s still well done enough to add it to your movie queue.
TIPS FOR PARENTS:
- Some profanity
- Rap music with the “N” word
- People are murdered at point blank range.
- Violence with various weapons
- Lots of destruction
THEMES:
- Racism
- Loyalty
- Police brutality
- Doing what’s right
- “The point is Be The Change, A-hole.” – Alicia West (Naomi Harris)
- Corruption
- Trust
THINGS I LIKED:
- British actress Naomi Harris is black and blue and fantastic. Her performance is why you should watch the movie.
- Speaking of cat and mouse, Tyrese Gibson does a great job playing a character whose nickname is “Mouse.” He’s tough and likable at the same time.
- I always enjoy movies where an innocent person is on the run constantly.
- I’m glad that the corruption wasn’t aimed at just one color or gender.
THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:
- Cop clichés
- Some plot holes will drive you nuts, so try not to let them bother you.
- It seemed short and like there could have been more to the plot with a little bit more creativity and time.
- Some of the scenes seemed completely ripped off from the film Training Day.
- Some people are tossing around the adjective “cheesy” to describe this movie. Well, maybe it is at times, but that’s ok.
- It’s sad that people are so afraid of helping others when it’s the right thing to do.
- Not very much humor. It’s a true drama.
