MOVIE TITLE:       The Informer

RATING:   R

LENGTH:    1 hour, 53 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B

IN A NUTSHELL:

This action thriller is directed by Andrea Di Stefano and is dramatic, gritty, and tense.  It’s based on a novel by Borge Hellstrom and tells the story of an honorably discharged Special Ops soldier whose life gets dumped on by a series of events and people who use him as an informer.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored out of their minds. So will some adults.
  • Tons of profanity and a zillion F-bombs.
  • Some foreign languages are spoken without subtitles (Spanish & Polish).
  • Some lesbian sexual innuendo
  • Violence
  • People get murdered at point blank range with blood splatters

THEMES:

  • Corruption
  • Trust
  • Loyalty
  • Taking control of your life
  • Choose your enemies wisely

THINGS I LIKED:

  • If you enjoyed watching Joel Kinnaman in Suicide Squad, you’ll like him in this too.
  • I’ve always liked Rosamund Pike. She’s consistent and always a pleasure to watch.
  • The talented cast also included Clive Owen, Common, Sam Spruell, and the lovely Ana de Armas.
  • I always like learning details about movies. For example, a part of this movie was filmed in an abandoned prison in England.  The rest of the movie was filmed in Philadelphia and New York.
  • I always think scenes about prison life are super interesting.
  • I intrigued by movies when people aren’t who they seem to be, which provides delightful twists in stories. This movie does that, but that also makes it difficult to know whom to root for when you’re watching the film.
  • I liked the movie poster because I thought it was intriguing. The images of the actors’ faces are on what looks like a bird, which could be explained for several reasons.  I want to know why YOU think the marketing team used that picture.  I’m thinking the bird is kind of like an eagle, because the protagonist served in the US military and was a hero OR it could be because he had to fly on his own to save his family.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • We’ve seen this kind of story and drama before.
  • The characters’ motivations are a bit unclear.
  • I’ve never understood why cops and feds don’t get along. Aren’t they supposed to be on the same side?
  • Some transitions are choppy.
  • Some viewers might get confused by what’s going on because there are so many characters and quick decisions that are made.
  • I’ve heard that some viewers have been disappointed by the ending of the movie. I actually like it when stories aren’t tied up in a nice bow at the end, but I definitely see their point because you don’t get that satisfied resolution you were hoping for.
  • No humor. It’s a serious drama.
  • Sometimes it’s hard to understand what people are saying.
