Fatale movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   FATALE

After pushing back the release date several times and utilizing very little marketing, the movie is now in select theaters and will be available on Video on Demand on January 8, 2021

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  1 hour 42 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   C+

IN A NUTSHELL:

Deon Taylor directs again thriller like The Intruder but this time starring Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy.  How does Deon Taylor get so many white people to act cray-cray in his movies?  When will people learn to stop cheating???!!!

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored
  • Profanity and F-bombs
  • Several scenes where you see people getting “intimate”.  You see lots of skin and motion.
  • Bloody violence with guns and knives

THEMES:

  • Temptation
  • Infidelity
  • Marriage
  • Some comments about how black people are always assumed guilty.
  • Cancel culture
  • Choices and consequences
  • Peer pressure
  • Greed & power

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Two-time Academy Award-winning Hilary Swank looks beautiful and gives a fierce performance.  Her character is crazy, cold-hearted, and vicious, yet she’s not portrayed as an evil, laughing villain from a cartoon, which I worried about before I saw the movie.
  • It provides some fun moments of suspense.
  • Lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing what’s going to happen next.
  • You’re going to want to yell at the screen.  It would have been entertaining to watch this movie in theaters just to hear comments from the audience.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • I’m always completely disgusted by infidelity.  The movie offers some Jerry Springer kind of garbage.
  • It’s definitely NOT worth racing out to the movie theater or paying theater ticket prices.  Wait to watch it at home.
  • I kind of expected it to be more thrilling…
  • Unfortunately, without Hilary Swank, there’s not much to see here.  We’ve seen it all before and done better.
  • There are some plot holes that don’t make sense.
  • The narration read at the beginning was super cheesy.
  • None of the characters are very relatable.  I didn’t feel much sympathy for any of them because they all caused their own problems.  The secondary characters aren’t very interesting either, mostly because we’re not given much information about them.  The movie just didn’t make me feel invested in any of the relationships.
  • No one knows how to pronounce this film.  The title is definitely supposed to make you think of the award-winning film Fatal Attraction but it’s not nearly as good.
  • The musical score is great at moments, but also surprisingly bad at moments too.
  • Other than a few moments, it’s not a very sexy movie.
  • No humor.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Our actions have very serious repercussions, especially when you damage other people.” – Detective Valerie Quinlan  (Hilary Swank)
  • “What you see in the night isn’t always what you see in the day.” – Detective Valerie Quinlan   (Hilary Swank)
  • “I don’t go after something unless I know I can get it.” – Detective Valerie Quinlan   (Hilary Swank)
  • “We gotta make sure we don’t make someone guilty before they’re not.” – TV announcer
