Crawl movie review

MOVIE TITLE:  Crawl

RATING:  R

LENGTH:   1 hour, 27 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Gators and gore.  Ironically, I watched this movie while a hurricane started brewing in the United States on the southern coast.  The film was actually inspired by a true event during Hurricane Florence with an alligator.  The movie was directed by French director/writer Alexandre Aja and is a fun summer flick that combines a disaster movie with horror and entertaining jump-scares.  It’s exactly what you think this movie is going to be like.

In case you’re wondering what the difference is between alligators and crocodiles, here’s some soop: Snout shape: Alligators have wider, U-shaped snouts, while crocodile front ends are more pointed and V-shaped. Toothy grin: When their snouts are shut, crocodiles look like they’re flashing a toothy grin, as the fourth tooth on each side of the lower jaw sticks up over the upper lip.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Profanity with F-bombs.
  • People in peril
  • blood and gore with bone and limbs
  • violence
  • Lots of screaming
  • Girls in bathing suits at a swim meet and in a locker room
  • Talk of a girl being caught with a boy in high school

THEMES:

I have one in each of my cars and in my house.  I also have some flares, which prove to be helpful in the movie.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I immediately liked the suspenseful music in the beginning and could tell that Haley’s skill in swimming was going to be helpful in the storyline.
  • The CGI is quite good and believable most of the time.
  • I think Kaya Scodelario does a great job as a determined fighter.  I liked her a lot in The Maze Runner
  • Sugar, the dog is a plus and the one most audiences seemed to be concerned about.
  • It doesn’t take very long to see the villainous alligator: only 22 minutes into the movie and it’s on!  The movie moves quickly, something which keeps the tension up.
  • You definitely feel claustrophobic and uncomfortable.  The shots and angles of the camera are really well placed.
  • The trailer is well done and has done a great job getting audiences excited about watching this movie.
  • You get to see a lot of gators and all of their bodies in full action.
  • The meeting was actually filmed in Serbia.  Weird, right?  Only $13.5 was budgeted for the film, yet it looks like more was spent.  Nice job, Paramount Pictures.
  • The Rasmussen brothers created a pretty tight script.
  • There aren’t a lot of new movies in theaters this weekend, so people wanting to get out of the summer heat and into an air-conditioned theater are probably going to see this.  Already, audiences seem to be getting a kick out of it.  If you like what you see in the trailer, you’ll enjoy the movie.  If it looks lame to you, you won’t.  The movie is exactly what you think it’s going to be.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • One chomp on the leg or arm from one of those alligators wouldn’t have allowed Haley or her dad to hardly move during the rest of the movie.
  • Most homes in Florida do NOT have crawlspaces.  Just sayin.
  • Stupid looters.  That ATM scene made me actually laugh out loud.
  • It’s always so frustrating to watch people make bad decisions.  You’ll roll your eyes a few times during this film.
  • The movie kind of ends abruptly.

STUPID LINES:

  • “You don’t know anything about me.” – Haley said to her dad.

 INTERESTING LINES:

  • “You’re like mom…empathetic from a safe distance.” – Haley (Kaya Scodelario)
  • “I don’t need your help.” – Dad  Why is it the people who always say that are precisely the ones who need help?
  • “Don’t cry. Don’t let them see you cry, Haley.” –  coach
