Hotel Artemis movie review

Movie Title:  Hotel Artemis

Grade:   C+

Rating: R, 97 minutes

In a Nutshell:   I had high hopes for this movie, based on the interesting, fun trailer, but I left disappointed.  The premise of the film provided promise, but it floundered in its execution.  Jodie Foster carries the movie with quirk, heart, and reliable talent.  It’s stylish with a Steampunk vibe that a lot of people will like. Otherwise, it’s a jumbled, confusing, violent mess.

Tips for parents:

  • Tons of bloody, brutal violence
  • Tons of profanity, including a million F-bombs.
  • Crime and criminals portrayed as cool.

Uplifting theme:

  • “Everyone’s a story teller.” – Nurse Jean Thomas (Jodie Foster)
  • Loyalty

Things I liked:

    • I love Jeff Goldbloom in anything.
    • I first noticed Zachary Quinto in Heroes: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] and he never disappoints.
    • Sterling K. Brown has been showing up in all kinds of movies recently.  I’ve seen his talent grow since his early years on Army Wives: Season 1.
    • Sofia Boutella is sexy as ever.  She has had an incredible few years recently, starting with The Mummy (2017) and then Atomic Blonde.
    • Jenny Slate has such a unique voice and is perfect for animation, but it’s always nice to see her in a dramatic role too.
    • Lots of intriguing characters.
    • While I love Dave Bautista in Guardians Of The Galaxy, it’s refreshing to see him without all of that make-up on every now and then.  He makes a great “Healthcare Professional.”
    • Like John Wick and his visits to the criminal hotel, this one features a nurse who cares only for injured criminals.  I thought it was hilarious that some of the hotel’s rules were “no killing other patients” and “no outside food or drink.”  The name of the hotel comes from the Greek goddess, Artemis.  By the way, John Wick is a much better movie.
  • The futuristic medicine was pretty cool.

Things I didn’t like:

  • Very chaotic and messy, especially during the First Act.
  • Very few characters I could relate to or even like.  It was hard to feel very invested in most of them.
  • The ending was disappointing.
  • The story line of Jean Thomas’ son was pretty predictable.  I kept thinking there would be some kind of interesting twist, but there wasn’t.
  • Sometimes it was hard to understand what people were saying..

Interesting lines:

  • “You heal them, I break them.” – Morgan (Jenny Slate)
