Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B-

IN A NUTSHELL:

Directed by Julia Hart, along with writing credits, this crime drama stars the MARVELOUS MRS MAISEL STAR Rachel Brosnahan.  She was absolutely fantastic in Seasons 1 & 2 and deserved the awards she won.  I enjoyed Season 1 but Season 2 was a piece of art.  Check out the Season 2 Official Trailer

I was excited to watch this movie simply because of her talent.  Set in the 1970s, a woman and her baby are forced to run for their lives after her husband betrays his partners and disappears.

This film was the big opening for the AFI Film Festival.  We often see crime dramas from the male protagonist’s view in the middle of the action, but this one shines a magnifying glass on the woman left behind to pick up the pieces from her point of view.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored out of their minds.  So will some adults.
  • Guns, shooting, murders
  • Some profanity and 2 F-bombs

THEMES:

  • Motherhood
  • Marriage
  • Courage
  • Loyalty
  • Friendship
  • Truth
  • Don’t look back.  Keep moving forward.
  • Independence, self-reliance

THINGS I LIKED:

  • As expected, Rachel Brosnahan is really great and gives a ferocious performance.  You never see Mrs. Maisel at all.  Rachel Brosnahan truly disappears.  It’s really intriguing to watch her subtly, slowly become a powerful, independent movie.  The director really takes her time with character development.
  • The talented cast also includes Arinze Kene and Marsha Stephanie Blake.
  • The baby is adorable but sure cries a lot.  He’s played by twins Jameson and Justin Charles.
  • The set pieces and costume design really take you back to the 1970s.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Just like the protagonist in the story, we’re all waiting for something to happen.  The slow burn becomes repetitive and they could have easily cut some scenes to improve the pacing.
  • Some of the quiet conversations are so silently muttered that it’s hard to understand what’s being said.
  • The movie title gave me certain expectations for the movie that were unmet.
  • If I were Jean (Rachel Brosnahan’s character), I would have asked a lot more questions!
  • We don’t get very much time with Eddie, played by Bill Heck, so we don’t know his backstory or motivations.  We also don’t see much love in the relationship, making us wonder how the two ever got together.  The audience is forced to fill in a lot of gaps.

FUNNY LINES:

* “I made a white baby?” –  Cal  (Arinze Kene)
