MOVIE TITLE:     MEAD

This sci-fi movie was released on select theaters on August 9, 2022 and is now available to stream online.

RATING:    PG

LENGTH:      1 hour 45 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  D

IN A NUTSHELL:

A fugitive starship (MEAD) and a lone passenger (Friz) evade earth forces utilizing their ability to project the passengers’ thoughts, creating illusions that fool pursuers, but tech is being developed to thwart the outlaws.

The sci-fi movie was directed AND written by J. Allen Williams with some writing help by Jan Strnad

Don’t let the poster fool you.  This is not a harmless kid’s movie but a sexually-charged romp through space for adults.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The movie poster caught my eye when I saw Patton Oswalt would be in it.  He voices M.E.A.D.  I also adore Patrick Warburton.  He voices Timmy the Wunderbolt.  They both do a good job, but the script really underserves their talents.
  • The movie feels like a 1980s sci-fi spoof.
  • I like the idea of using your mind to create illusions to defeat an enemy.
  • Some of the musical choices are very good, especially in Act 3 and in the closing credits.
  • Keep watching during the rolling credits at the end of the movie for a final scene.
  • It’s creative!

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The movie has been described as “ambitious” in its ideas, but the execution is terrible.
  • The film looks and feels very low budget.
  • Some really bad acting.
  • Kids will be bored within minutes and not be able to understand what’s going on.
  • The audio sounds hollow most of the time.
  • The humor is very juvenile.
  • This is the kind of movie that can best be enjoyed when drunk.  I don’t drink alcohol, so I thought it was really stupid.
  • All of the women in the movie are super annoying, abrasive, and treated like objects.
  • When the movie starts, we see a man and a holographic woman in a very sexual position.
  • The staging/blocking of the actors is very stiff.
  • Act 3 fizzles for a long time with a long exposition scene and no action or resolution.  Instead, it drifts into a conversation about a sequel.  Does anyone want more of this?

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • We see a topless woman with tattoos from the back.
  • Profanity
  • Sci-fi/space violence.
  • A lot of sexually-charged conversations are inappropriate for kids.

THEMES:

  • Reality vs. illusion
  • Hope
  • Connection
  • Teamwork

FUNNY LINES:

“Reality is vastly overrated.” –   M.E.A.D.   (Patton Oswalt)

“Nothing up my sleeves.  I got no sleeves, so you know I’m on the level.” –  M.E.A.D.   (Patton Oswalt)

“Will you please control/alt/delete yourself?” –   Phoebe    (Lillie Young)
