MOVIE TITLE:    Resistance

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  2 hours

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Set in World War II, this is the true story of famous pantomime performer Marcel Marceau during the French Resistance and how he and his Resistance group saved 10,000 orphans.  He believed that mime was the art of silence.  Silence can be an effective weapon too.  Not all wars are fought by only soldiers.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • People get shot
  • Discussion of a young girl’s first period.
  • Talk to your kids about orphans and remind them how lucky you all are to be a family together.
  • A man gets beaten.  Another man catches on fire. Displays of brutality.
  • You see a man and woman kissing in bed.
  • Talk of torture.

THEMES:

  • Courage
  • Heroism
  • Faith

THINGS I LIKED:

  • It was fascinating to learn the real-life story of Marcel Marceau.  I had no idea.  As a little girl, I was fascinated with his dying art and saw sadness in it.  Now I understand why.
  • Some reel/real footage of WWII.
  • Can you imagine how frightening and confusing it must have been to be a child during the Holocaust?
  • Young Bella Ramsey was effective and memorable as the lead orphan girl.
  • French actress Clemence Poesy was mesmerizing to watch.  You may have seen her before in In Bruges or Tunnel: Season 1.
  • Matthias Schweighofer does a great job as a perfectly demented Klaus Barbie.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • I adore Jesse Eisenberg, but his accent wasn’t very good in this movie.  He seemed miscast for the role as Marcel Marceau, although he made a valiant effort.
  • The script isn’t as compelling as it could have been. It’s pretty formulaic.
  • Many critics have claimed that the movie’s tone is uneven.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Courage is no more than fear holding on a minute longer.” –   George S. Patton  (Ed Harris)
  • “No symbol is more dangerous for oppressors than Jews because Jews are emancipated slaves.” – Dominique    (Aurelie Bancilhon)
  • “We can kill some…”  – Emma   (Clemence Poesy)         “Or we can save some.” – Marcel Marceau (Jesse Eisenberg)
  • “There are lots of beautiful things in life.” – Marcel
