MOVIE TITLE:   Sorry We Missed You

RATING:  R

LENGTH:   1 hour, 41 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   A

IN A NUTSHELL:

Directed by award-winning Ken Loach, this heartbreaking British film explores the daily grind that so many people experience.  It’s partially inspired by the true story of Don Lane, a courier for DPD who died because of so many sacrifices he made for his job while neglecting his own health.  This depressing movie is a sucker punch to your heart and may make you actually feel better about your own life.

It feels very realistic and honest, so you get sucked in immediately.  You just might look at your Amazon delivery driver in a new light.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Profanity, including soooo many F-bombs and British profanity
  • Kids will be extremely bored.  For the language alone, I wouldn’t recommend this movie to kids.
  • A man gets beat up and bloodied.

THEMES:

  • Communication
  • Marriage
  • Balancing life
  • Work
  • Economic injustice
  • Humanity – taking care of others, doing the right thing
  • The tale of the underdog
  • Family
  • Outsourcing
  • Latch-key children
  • Choice
  • Parenthood
  • Sacrifices

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I felt like I was starting a new job right along with Kris Hitchen.  I really felt his pain.
  • The elderly people in some of the scenes are not actors, but real people.  Well, now that they’re in this movie, I guess they ARE actors!  Those scenes were really touching.
  • The ensemble cast won’t be recognized by most American audiences, but they’re excellent.  Kris Hitchen is outstanding and you just want to give him a hug.  Debbie Honeywood does such a great job as a loving, kind, forgiving wife, mother, and caregiver.  Even the children actors, Rhys Stone and Katie Proctor, are fantastic.
  • It feels timely as many families are still recovering from the aftermath of the 2008 world recession.
  • It does an excellent job exploring work and life choices.
  • Movies that make you FEEL are so powerful.  This one makes you feel so many things that you’re exhausted by the end.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • It’s very depressing and NOT a feel-good movie.  You definitely need to know that before you watch this.  Some people who watch movies to escape from their lives won’t find relief in this very realistic film about how hard life can be.
  • It might be hard for some Americans to understand everything being said with various British accents.
  • It’s a slow burn.
  • It made me sad that so many people were so cranky and mean to each other.  We’re all trying to do our best in life and should be way more supportive, right?
