MOVIE TITLE:     Taylor Swift The Eras tour

This Taylor Swift concert is still available in theaters.

RATING:    PG-13  (I was kind of surprised the rating was so high)

LENGTH:     2 hours 49 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:     A

IN A NUTSHELL:

If you weren’t able to buy tickets and travel to one of the cities that hosted Taylor Swift’s famous”The Eras Tour”, you can now get front-row seats in an AMC theater near you!  Rather than working with major film studios, Taylor Swift chose to distribute this movie directly through AMC.

The movie version of her tour was directed by Sam Wrench.  You’ll be able to see more than if went to the concert.  The film has already been nominated for the Best Music Documentary by the Critics Choice Documentary Award!

When Taylor pitched the idea to the major film distributors, they all said no.  She knew her fans were loyal, so she released it through her own company at her own expense.  The film has already grossed $131 million!   Smart, talented, and beautiful.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • If you’re a “Swiftie”, you’ll love this movie. If you don’t really know her music, this is a great introduction to her and to her raving fans who have memorized every single word of each of her songs and exuberantly sing along with Taylor.
  • Taylor Swift handed a hat to someone in the audience at the end of the 22. It turns out, the recipient was Kobe Bryant gave Taylor Swift an award for selling out the Staples Arena two times.  Taylor and young Bianka hug twice, an instant heartwarming moment of the show.
  • The movie CRUSHED all box office ticket sales during its opening weekend. She didn’t want the theater screenings to be sparsely attended on weekdays, so she only ran the film from Thursday to Sunday.
  • The direction gives you the best seat in the house. You see Taylor up close, but you also get shots of singing fans and aerial views that are very cool.
  • The director does a great job giving you intimate, close-up moments with Taylor but also pans out so you can see the enormous scope of the arena and sets.
  • I loved the costume changes and set designs.
  • Taylor Swift captivates the audience when she is alone on the stage just as much as when she has dancers, backup singers, and staging gimmicks.
  • If the gorgeous and talented Margot Robbie didn’t exist, Taylor Swift would have been the perfect Barbie in her glittery bathing suit.
  • One of the most stunning things about Taylor Swift is that she is still extremely loved and has decades more to come where she’ll be writing and singing even more great hits!
  • The movie features Taylor Swift’s diverse team of backup singers and dancers.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • If you think you’re going to be able to sit in your theater seat and enjoy the show, you’re mistaken. Fans are going to stand up, dance, and sing all around you.  That might be fun or annoying, depending on who else is in the audience with you!
  • If you’re expecting behind-the-scenes interviews, you’ll be disappointed. The film is just the concert.
  • At a length of just under 3 hours, watching this movie is a serious investment of time. The good news is that it’s 3 hours of fun.
  • There is something really special that happens at Taylor Swift’s concerts that the movie didn’t really capture well:  friendship bracelets.  Attendees of Taylor Swift’s shows always bring friendship bracelets to exchange with one another.  We got to see a few clips of girls wearing them during the final rolling credits, but it would have been cute to see girls actually swapping them with each other during the concert to show that’s a very real part of the whole experience and something the concert goers truly look forward to.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • I was surprised the film got a rating of PG-13. Then again, she wears a lot of skimpy outfits and sings songs with a touch of profanity.  Otherwise, if you have kids who are Swifties, I think they’ll really love this.

THEMES:

  • Love
  • Woman power
  • Self-respect
  • Persistence
  • Friendship
