Underwater movie review

MOVIE TITLE:  Underwater

RATING:  PG-13

LENGTH:    1 hour, 35 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Director William Eubank takes a French captain and a bunch of good-looking Millennials to the bottom of the sea.  That sounds dumb but I was actually engaged the whole time.  Well, most of the time.

When Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the release date for this movie was pushed to January 2020.  The film was shot clear back in 2017 when a similar movie called Life hit theaters.  Did you see that one? Instead of going out to space like that film, guess where this movie takes place?  Exactly…UNDERWATER.  Same movie, basically.  Still entertaining.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • You see a lot of skin on women and men.
  • You see dead bodies and watch people die.
  • People in perilous situations.
  • Some profanity, but a surprisingly lack of it considering the intensity of the movie.
  • A woman punches another woman.

THEMES:

  • “Stop looking back. Look forward.” – Captain  (Vincent Cassel)
  • Fear, courage
  • Sacrifice for others
  • “There are things that will happen that make you feel powerless, that make you feel insignificant.  But that’s it.  They’re just feelings.  And sometimes you have to stop feeling and start doing.” – Norah   (Kristen Stewart)

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I liked Kristen Stewart’s look with the short, blonde hair. She seems to give it her all in this movie and I though it was a good performance.
  • The movie starts off with an intriguing first scene and then jumps into action.
  • Some great slow-motion shots.
  • Lots of fun, silly jump scares.
  • You get to see the sea creatures fairly up close.
  • Some cool special effects.
  • Notice the spider at the beginning of the movie and how it foreshadows the sea creatures later on.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • A lot of people are saying UNDERWATER is just a retread of Life and Alien, stealing ideas from it, rather than creating new ones.
  • When will girls learn that screaming doesn’t help? I’m completely guilty of it too.  Ha ha
  • There is a lot of shaky cam and jiggling around that makes it difficult to see everything that’s going on in the darkness.  When the film comes out on streaming, some scenes will be really hard to see on small screens.
  • Lots of cliched moments you would expect in a movie like this.
  • You don’t get to know much about the characters to really care about them.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “What’s the scariest part of a roller coaster? Waiting in line.” –    (John Gallagher Jr.)
  • “What did the fish say when it bumped into a brick wall?  Dam.”  – Pool   (T.J. Miller)
  • “Alright, Emily. This is your time.  I’m just messing with you.” –  Pool  (T. J. Miller)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Can you just admit we might die doing that?” – Nora     “Can you admit we might live doing this?” – Captain
  • “If we’re going to do this, let’s DO this!” – Pool, as he cranks up the music to get everyone excited
