MOVIE TITLE:           Bad Hombres

This dark comedy thriller releases on January 25, 2024 on Paramount Plus.

RATING:   R

LENGTH:       1 hour 32 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:    B

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about two undocumented immigrants who take the simple job of digging a hole in the desert on land owned by someone else.  When the Mexicans discover that their “employers” turn out to be complete psychopaths, staying alive will become the most complex job of their lives.

The movie was directed by John Stalberg Jr., who also co-wrote it with Rex New and Nick Turner.

The film won 2 awards at the Mammoth Film Festival where it premiered in March of 2023: “Grand Jury Award” and “Achievement in Screenwriting.”

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Diego Tinoco takes a serious beating in this movie. I had never seen him in anything before, and thought he did an outstanding job.
  • The entire cast did a great job and includes Hemky Madera, Paul Johansson, Nick Cassavetes, Thomas Jane, Tyrese Gibson, and more.
  • If you’re a Chris or Liam Hemsworth fan, you might be interested to see his older brother in a movie. Here you go!  His name is Luke.  I can definitely see the resemblance!
  • We learn a bunch of “fun facts” about the USA from an Australian in the movie.
  • I’ve always liked “survive the night” type of movies. It ramps up the tension immensely.
  • There’s a scene where the camera slowly pans across a room while we hear shuffling feet and gunshots. I like that kind of direction because it leaves more to the imagination than when a director just shows a bloody massacre.  I’m talking to you, Quentin Tarantino.
  • Good soundtrack.
  • All of the characters are flawed, struggling with their own demons.
  • As illegal immigration at the USA/Mexico border has hit record highs and will be a big talking point during this upcoming election, the timing of this movie’s release is perfect.  It paints a violent, dangerous, and heartbreaking perspective of the issue.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the characters seemed like cartoon character villains because they’re such bad hombres.
  • One of the actors (Luke Hemsworth) has a thick Australian accent that is often hard to understand.
  • One of the characters rips on conservative ideology and is a conspiracy theorist.
  • Almost every sentence has an F-bomb in it. I get that the film features scumbag gangsters and bad hombres, but it just seemed like lazy writing to me.
  • Act 1 has some humor but the rest of the movie is just bad guys swearing and shooting each other.
  • If you are sensitive to 100% toxic masculinity, this movie is definitely not for you.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • This movie is not appropriate for children.
  • Profanity, a million F-bombs, and some crude conversations in Spanish & English
  • Spanish is spoken with subtitles
  • We see bloody, brutal deaths
  • TONS of violence

THEMES:

  • Illegal immigration
  • Work
  • Choices
  • Standing up for others in need
  • Choosing your “friends” wisely

FUNNY LINES:

None.  There are some amusing moments; however, this is definitely not a comedy.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Everything has a cost.” – Alfonso (Hemky Madera)
  • “I made a deal with the devil, one I intend to keep.” – Alfonso (Hemky Madera)
