IN A NUTSHELL:

This Polish film was based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the same name by Wladyslav Reymont.  The screenplay was written and directed by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman.

THINGS I LIKED:

• This film is absolutely gorgeous to look at with the painted effect. So many of the illustrations are so stunning.
• The cinematography is fantastic. So many frames look like picture-perfect vignettes from a European masterpiece.
• I had never seen any of the actors in anything before. I thought they all gave outstanding performances.
• Kamila Urzedowska is such a beauty. I hope she’s able to crossover into some Hollywood films.
• The film does an excellent job portraying the difficult and unfair society of peasant life.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

• Despite the hardships, it was fascinating to see how some characters were able to exhibit dignity.
• I liked the ending, but I also wanted more. I imagine a lot of viewers would hope for revenge or a happy ending of some kind.  How would YOU write the ending to this?

TIPS FOR PARENTS:    

• Kid will be bored.
• It’s a foreign film with English subtitles
• We see a topless woman a couple of times, then full frontal nudity
• An unmarried couple gets intimate in a pile of hay
• Violence with various weapons, as well as hand-to-hand combat
• A man tries to rape a woman at two different times.
• A mob beats a woman
