Clifford the Big Red Dog movie review 2021

MOVIE TITLE:  Clifford The Big Red Dog (4K UHD)

This doggone cute family flick is in theaters now and on Paramount+.

#LoveBig

RATING:    PG

LENGTH:     1 hour 37 minutes

IN A NUTSHELL:

A young girl’s love for a tiny puppy she names Clifford makes the dog grow to an enormous size.

The film was directed by Walt Becker.

THINGS I LIKED:

    • Jack Whitehall is super entertaining.  He’s British but plays an American who, at times, pretends to mimic the British accent.  Have you ever seen his Netflix series where he travels with his dad around the world?  It’s called “Travels with my Father”.  Check it out!
    • Darby Camp is really sweet and does a great job.
    • Young kids won’t appreciate some of the legendary actors in the cast, but their parents will kick out of seeing them like John Cleese, Paul Rodriguez, David Alan Grier, Tovah Feldshuh, and Rosie Perez,
    • Kenan Thompson used to voice “Hamburger” in the Clifford the Big Red Dog series in 2003.
    • I also get a kick out of Tony Hale.
    • I was surprised to see Siobhan Fallon Hogan play such a small role in this movie.  I think she’s such an underrated actress.  She was absolutely superb in the movie RUSHED.
  • Lovely music.
  • You can’t go wrong with New York City as one of the characters in the story.
  • I hope that my little grandson will grow up to look like the adorable Izaac Wang.  His mom is from Hong Kong!

  • The character Mr. Bridwell is named after the “Clifford the Big Red Dog” book series creator Norman Bridwell.
  • Cinefiles will get a kick out of the famous “Wilhelm scream” when Clifford knows the person inside the bubble ball in the air at the park.
  • You don’t need to have seen the animated TV series about Clifford the Big Red Dog in order to enjoy this family-friendly movie.
  • Lots of humor, although some of the adult jokes will go over your kids’ heads.  Young kids will laugh at all of the crazy shenanigans.  Of course, young kids don’t use the word “shenanigans.”  ha ha

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of Clifford’s animation didn’t look that good, especially when Emily and Casey ride him like a horse.
  • There are some bad and overacting acting moments.
  • Lame and predictable dialogue.
  • A cliched narrative about evil, big corporations.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Fair warning: your kids WILL want a pet dog after they see this.
  • Bullying
  • Some “light” profanity.

THEMES:

  • “Magic is all around us if you just know where to look.” – the narrator  (John Cleese)
  • Stand up for yourself
  • Love big
  • The kind of education you can’t get in a classroom
  • Use your voice.
  • Lost souls
  • Community

FUNNY LINES:

  • Great! I’ll have an epic vocabulary to go with my decades of therapy.” –  Emily   (Darby Camp)
  • “This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen and I’ve been to Burning Man.” –   Casey  (Jack Whitehall)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “We have to be big and strong so the world can’t hurt us.” – Emily  (Darby Camp)
  • “Just because you’re different doesn’t mean it’s okay to be bullied.” – Emily  (Darby Camp)
  • “If we can love each other like this, none of us has to feel small and alone.” – Emily   (Darby Camp)
