MOVIE TITLE:     Day Shift

This dark-action comedy is available on Netflix on August 12, 2022.

RATING:    R

LENGTH:      1 hour 53 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  B-

IN A NUTSHELL:

The story is about a hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 8-year-old daughter.  His mundane San Fernando Valley pool-cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires.

This movie is J. J. Perry’s directorial debut.  It was written by Tyler Tice and Shay Hatten.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • They had me at Academy Award-winner Jamie Foxx.
  • The amusing cast includes Dave Franco, Scott Adkins, Steve Howey, Peter Stormare, Meagan Good, and Karla Souza.
  • I love little details.  For example, when some of the characters enter the Hunters Union, you see a portrait on the left of Abraham Lincoln with two axes on the wall.  It’s an entertaining and respectful nod to the Timur Bekmambetov movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Have you seen it?  It’s based on a true story.  ha ha
  • Snoop Dogg in a cowboy hat.  He speaks Japanese and smoothly utters the secret phrase “Pink Puffy Penguin Pants.”  ha ha   Plus, we get to hear his music.
  • The fight scenes are well choreographed and entertaining, albeit extremely violent and gory.  Director J. J. Perry has an impressive filmography where he worked on the students and fight scenes including John Wick and The Fast and Furious.
  • The entire time, I wondered why the vampire hunters didn’t just shine lights on the vampires or get them out in the sunshine to kill them.  Jaime Foxx’s character explains that the vampires have developed a super strong sunscreen that allows them to be outside for 15 to 20 minutes.  The formula is made from the shell of a desert tortoise and is illegal in 40 countries.  ha ha

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • A lot of the humor doesn’t land.
  • So many exposition scenes.
  • I hate watching people vomit in movies.  We just really don’t need to see that.  Of course, that’s one of the least disgusting visuals in this movie.
  • Good vampires, eh?

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Super violent with disgusting, brutal deaths
  • Bloody, gory
  • Profanity in English and Spanish, including F-bombs.  A little girl swears.
  • Someone flips the bird.

THEMES:

  • Family
  • Parenting
  • Working hard to provide for your family
  • Teamwork
  • Courage

FUNNY LINES:

* “Excuse me.  Do you guys have any Black History Month discounts?” –    Bud     (Jamie Foxx)

  • “Snitches get stitches.  We were gonna keep that between us.” –   Bud        (Jamie Foxx)
  • “I’ve cut out pork and cartoons and minimal white women.” – Bud   (Jamie Foxx)
