This Lovecraft-like horror/mystery is available to watch on Video on Demand.

LENGTH:      1 hour 19 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  D

IN A NUTSHELL:

After a breakup, Wes ends up at a remote rest stop.  He finds himself locked inside the bathroom with a mysterious figure speaking from an adjacent stall.  Soon, Wes realizes he’s involved in a situation more terrible than he could imagine.

The strange body/horror movie was directed by Rebekah McKendry.  The film was written by David Ian McKendry, Joshua Hull, and Todd Rigney.

Ultimately, I’m definitely not the target audience for this movie.  It’s not my definition of “glorious” at all.  The title of the movie caught my attention, so I wanted to see what the director’s interpretation of that word was.  I don’t often watch trailers before I review a movie, so I was severely disappointed.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I’ve always enjoyed performances by J.K Simmons.  He voices the mysterious creature with wit and power.
  • The protagonist is played by Ryan Kwanten who is mostly known for his work in HBO’s True Blood.
  •  What makes Lovecraft horror so intriguing to people is that it takes what people fear most and can’t explain, and then exploits it as unknowable and incomprehensible.  The attempt is to look at our place in the universe by exploring reality versus madness.  Honestly, it’s not my cup of tea, but I recognize many viewers who love that style of storytelling will think this movie is cool.
  • Fans of Lovecraft horror movies will probably catch on that Ghatanothoa is the son of the god Cthulhu.
  • It’s definitely creative.’
  • Some of the dialogue is humorous.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • It’s a very slow burn with little payoff.
  •  Gross bathroom!
  •  I hate it when the very first word of a movie is an F-bomb.
  •  I also hate watching and listening to people throw up in movies.
  •  The special effects are pretty mediocre.
  •  While the movie is short, I kept waiting for the punchline and for the movie to be over.  Disappointed.
  • Super bloody and gory and gross.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be completely bored.  Plus, they shouldn’t watch this for the language and gross images anyway.
  •  Profanity and F-bombs
  •  Tons of disgusting blood and gore

THEMES:

  • Selfishness
  • Dominance
  •  Loneliness
  •  Memories
  • Your place in the universe
  • Karma
  • Salvation
