Holmes and Watson movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   Holmes And Watson

RATING: PG-13

LENGTH: 1 hour 30 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  D for really DUMB.  D for Don’t even think about spending your money on this garbage.  It really is an F.

IN A NUTSHELL:  Holmes And Watson is just really stupid.  Here’s an indication of how bad this movie is….when Sony tried to sell the film to Netflix, Netflix DECLINED.  Wow.  Theaters have reported that there was an unusually high amount of audience members who actually walked out of the Holmes And Watson movie because they thought it was so bad.  It has an impressively low 8% score on the “Tomatometer” on Rotten Tomatoes.  Wow.

Sadly, it’s just not funny.  I’m assuming that the writers were completed drunk or high (or both) when they wrote this, thinking it was hilarious.  If you’re sober when you watch this, you know full well that it’s just not good comedy.

A few years ago, I actually went on a Sherlock Holmes walking tour of London.  British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would be rolling over in his grave if he ever saw this movie disaster. I think he might actually like the Benedict Cumberbatch TV series called Sherlock: Season 1

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Profanity, including an F-bomb
  • Crude gestures
  • Peeing jokes
  • A young child is in a boxing match
  • Lots of talk of a certain male anatomical body part
  • Suggestive romance scenes that are super awkward

THEMES:

  • Logic
  • Friendship

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have worked together twice before in Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby and Step Brothers.  Together, they have good chemistry, but it’s not enough to save this terrible movie.  They both know comedy, so I’m surprised they didn’t walk away from this script.
  • I love Kelly Macdonald’s adorable Scottish accent.  She was the actress who voiced the lead role in the cute movie Brave. Unfortunately, she spends most of this movie playing a really dumb character.  What am I saying?  Pretty much everyone in this movie plays a dumb character.
  • Funny Billy Zane cameo on the Titanic.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • The trailer shows pretty much the best parts of the movie.  If you think the trailer looks stupid, then you’re right about the rest of the movie.
  • Lots of political jabs at the United States and its president.  Once might be funny, but it gets old real fast.
  • Random, terrible musical number.  What the ???  John C. Reilly can actually sing though.  I thought he was great in Chicago.
  • It ended with a cliff hanger for a sequel.  Nooooo!
  • I really like Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon and want them to do well in America, so it’s too bad that they picked this film to be in.  I thought they were both super funny in their quirky movie The Trip.  Their second trip and movie together called The Trip to Italy wasn’t as funny though.
  • Traditionally, Moriarty has always been single, but in this movie, he has a daughter.
  • There is some really terrible voice-over dubbing.
  • The editing is noticeably bad.
  • Just lazy film-making.  For example, there are several scenes where they’re eating onions, but you can tell they’re really not eating onions and it just looks stupid.
  • It’s interesting that the Millennials seem to be really turning on Will Ferrell.  I don’t know a single one who says they like him anymore.
  • Lots of physical comedy and slapstick.  That’s good if you like that kind of humor, but if you’re hoping for more intelligent humor, you won’t find it here.
  • I’m surprised that two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes said yes to this movie.  What was he thinking?

FUNNY LINES:
*  Ummmm…..well, hmmm…I know there was something I laughed at.  Nope, I can’t think of it.  It must not have happened.

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Logic is the sword by which we slay ancient superstitions. But lo, the heart has its own truths to teach us.”  – Hannah Montana Season 2, Episode 7  (That’s the first thing you see on the screen when the movie starts.)
