Memory movie review

IN A NUTSHELL:

I’ve been a Liam Neeson fan for as long as he’s been making movies, but this one just didn’t grab me.

It’s about an assassin-for-hire who finds that he’s become a target after he refuses to complete a job for a dangerous criminal organization. A remake of the 2003 Belgian film ‘The Memory of a Killer.

THINGS I LIKED:

• I adore Liam Neeson and watched this movie simply because he stars in it.  Don’t we love his characters who are flawed but have a heart and moral code?  Well, that basically describes all of the characters he plays.
• Guy Pearce is an excellent actor.  I’ve enjoyed him in everything he has done.
• The cast also includes Monica Bellucci, Taj Atwal, Harold Torres, Ray Stevenson, and Ray Fearon.
• Twists!  I love twists!

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

• Completely forgettable.  No pun intended.
• I’m worried about Liam Neeson because he has been pumping out a lot of mediocre movies lately.  Is it a final money grab before he announces his retirement?
• Cliched dialogue.
• The characters are given very little backstory.  Ultimately, we just don’t care.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:    

• Kids will be entirely bored.  So will some adults.
• Due to the extreme violence and tons of profanity, this is NOT recommended for children’s viewing.
• Bloody, gory deaths.
• High dead-body count.

THEMES:

• Memory loss
• Murder
• Innocence
• Bureaucracy
• Justice
• The legacy we leave with what we’ve done with our life
