Mission Impossible Fallout delivers in a big way

Movie Title:   Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Grade:   A

Rating: PG-13, 147 minutes

In a Nutshell:  This fun franchise continues to deliver.  I’m such a fan.  It’s cool, dramatic, funny, and filled with impossible stunts that make your jaw drop open in awe.  I kept whispering to my husband, “How did they do that?”

Tom Cruise delivers, as does his talented cast.  It’s everything you want another Mission: Impossible movie to be.

Tips for parents:

  • Some profanity and 1 F-bomb.  This is the first time an F-bomb has been used in a Mission: Impossible movie.
  • There’s a bathroom scene that alludes to homosexual encounters.
  • Lots of violence and destruction.
  • Some deaths.
  • Kids won’t be able to follow the plot very well, but they’ll think all the action sequences are super cool.
  • If you see this at a Regal Cinema, you’ll get a “Movie Bill” which is a mini-magazine with awesome features that interact with your cell phone app.  Your kids will love it.

Uplifting theme:

  • People are more important than projects.
  • Persistence.
  • Doing what’s right.
  • Protecting those you love.
  • Sacrifice for others.

Things I liked:

  • Really entertaining beginning that starts the movie off right, just like all of the other films in this Mission: Impossible franchise.
  • Incredible set pieces.
  • Not only are the stunts ridiculous and awesome, but they show Ethan Hunt crashing, falling, rolling, and failing.  Sure, he’s as sleek and cool as ever, but he is also shown as human with weaknesses.  He is impressively tenacious, which endears you to his character even more.  He does his own stunts, by the way. Tom Cruise always looks great running. He works REALLY hard in this movie and gives you your money’s worth for the price of the ticket. He trained for an entire year just to do the HALO (High Altitude Low Opening) stunt in this movie. He broke his ankle while jumping from two rooftops in one of the chase scenes.
  • I love movie titles that have double meanings.  The fallout refers to nuclear fallout, as well as consequences from certain actions.
  • Lots of humor.
  • Amazing views.  It’s especially good in 3D.  This is the first Mission Impossible film shown in 3D.  What took so long?
  • I love watching Rebecca Ferguson.   She was absolutely stunning in The Greatest Showman.  I watched the scene where she sings “Never Enough” over and over again.  She was mesmerizing.  Of course, it wasn’t really her singing at all, but instead, Loren Allred.  Rebecca was super convincing though.  You would never know that she was almost seven months pregnant while filming Mission Impossible Fallout!
  • Alec Baldwin looked good and was really funny in this film.
  • Superman Henry Cavill is solid in every movie he makes.  He was offered this role from the director via his Instagram account.  He improvised one of the cool moves with the gun in the bathroom fight scene.  By the way, that scene was so complex that it took 4 weeks to film.  Wow.
  • Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames are great sidekicks.
  • Sean Harris makes such a creepy villain.  That voice…
  • You’ll look at “The White Widow” and think she looks familiar.  She is!  She is Vanessa Kirby, who played in the popular TV show Crown, the – Season 01 as the queen’s sister.  She’s beautiful as a blonde or a brunette.
  • It’s always good to see Angela Bassett.
  • The action is so unrelenting that you’ll be exhausted by the end of the movie.
  • Plot twists that keep you thinking.
  • I really liked what they did with Michelle Monaghan’s character.

Things I didn’t like:

  • A lot of scenes take place in the dark, making it difficult to see what’s going on.
  • It’s a really long movie.  In fact, it’s the longest of all the Mission Impossible films: 2 hours and 27 minutes.
  • You need to have seen the last movie in this franchise in order to fully appreciate this one and understand the background stories of the characters and plot.

Funny lines:

  • “What the hell is he doing?” –  Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson)

“I find it best not to look.” – Benji (Simon Pegg)

  • “It’s the job.  No hard feelings.” – Superman
  • “I’ve ruined your day, haven’t I?” – Alan Hunley  (Alec Baldwin)
  • “I’m beginning to see why you guys enjoy this so much.” – Alan
  • “Hope is not a strategy.” – Walker (Henry Cavill)

“He must be new.” – Ilsa

  • “We’ll burn that bridge when we get to it.” – Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise)
  • “Was the little car your idea?” – Benji

Interesting lines:

  • “Fate whispers to the warrior ‘A storm is coming.’”  Delivery man

“And the warrior whispers, ‘I am the storm.’” – Ethan
