MOVIE TITLE:    Resort to Love

Releases July 29, 2021, exclusively on Netflix.

RATING:  PG-13

LENGTH:  1 hour 41 minutes

IN A NUTSHELL:

A romantic comedy about aspiring pop star Erica (Christina Milian) who ends up as the entertainment at her ex-fiancé’s wedding after reluctantly taking a gig at a luxurious Mauritius island resort while in the wake of a music career meltdown. She tries to keep their past relationship a secret from his bride-to-be, but Erica rediscovers her feelings for her ex, Jason (Jay Pharoah), despite his brother Caleb’s (Sinqua Walls) attempts to keep them from falling back in love. In this warm and funny romantic story that explores the bonds of love and family, the question soon becomes will Erica sing at Beverly’s wedding – or her own? This cute rom-com is directed by Steven K. Tsuchida.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Christina Milian is fantastic in this role.  She has some good acting chops and an incredible voice.  She’s beautiful and funny and instantly likable as this character.
  • Great soundtrack, thanks to Christina Milian.
  • Saturday Night Live comedian Jay Pharoah has made it as a leading man.  Good on him!  We know he can make us laugh, but we also learn in this movie that he can make us cry and feel “all the feelings.”
  • Well, hello there Sinqua Walls.  Women are going to be swooning all over the country when they see his many shirtless scenes.  I didn’t remember ever seeing Sinqua Walls before, so I looked up his bio online.  He’s actually been in a ton of shows that I’ve never watched, except I have seen him play Sir Lancelot in the popular TV show on ABC called “Once Upon A Time.”  I watched that entire series and now I remember seeing him in that role.  It’s one of the very few performances of that character portrayed by a Black American on TV.
  • I liked the fact that none of the characters have it all figured out.  When I say “it”, I mean life and romance.  In that regard, the characters seem very real.  Sometimes these movies are filled with cliched characters that are overexaggerated and even cartoon-like.  There is still a little bit of that at times, but overall, I really enjoyed it.  A girl’s just got to watch a good Chick Flick every now and then, you know?
  • Mauritius is now on my Bucket List radar.  I don’t know anyone personally who has ever been there, but this movie has sold me on going there!  The paradise island looks absolutely gorgeous and the movie definitely gave me a tropical vacation vibe.  It’s located in the Indian Ocean and recently captured the world’s attention by showing pictures and videos of its underwater waterfall illusion.  It’s actually sand and silt that are constantly in motion that makes it look like a waterfall falling into the ocean from the ocean.  A peak on the island has actually been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.  Okay, I’ll stop talking and book my airline ticket to Mauritia already!
  • The title is perfect.
  • If you enjoy Hallmark rom-coms, you’ll enjoy this.  Other than a lot of outfits that show off cleavage, there really wasn’t anything objectionable about the movie.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There are a few times when the lip-sync doesn’t quite match up when Christina sings.  I forgive the error though because she has such a beautiful voice.
  • As soon as you see the handsome Sinqua Walls on the screen, you know immediately what’s going to happen.
  • Admittedly, the story and dialogue are super cheesy.  Who cares?  It was still fun to just pretend I was on a tropical island vacation for an hour and 40 minutes.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored
  • Sooo much cleavage
  • No profanity  (Thank you!)
  • I appreciated the fact that we didn’t have to watch a bunch of people go bed-hopping, which often happens in these kinds of movies.

THEMES:

  • Family
  • Marriage
  • Love
  • Romance
  • Friendship
  • Holding on to your dreams
  • Closing a door and moving forward
