This dramatic, unique story released in select theaters on February 22, 2024 and is now available on Netflix.

RATING:    R

LENGTH:      1 hour 47 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE: B

IN A NUTSHELL:

Half a year into his solo mission on the edge of the solar system, an astronaut concerned with the state of his life back on Earth is helped by an ancient creature he discovers in the bowels of his ship.

The film is based on the book of the same name.  Your expectations will absolutely determine how much or little you enjoy this movie.  Fair warning:  this is NOT the typical Adam Sandler silly flick.

The movie was directed by Johan Renck.  Writing credits go to Colby Day.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Adam Sandler is known for all of his goofy, crude movies, but lately, he has been trying to create films so his work is taken more seriously.  There’s nothing wrong with creating silly movies because we all need to laugh and escape from our lives sometimes, but I admire his efforts to add more artistic substance to his filmography.
  • I adore Carey Mulligan, Lena Olin, and Isabella Rossellini in every movie I see them in.  They’re three talented beauties.
  • Also in the cast are Kunal Nayyar and Paul Dano.  Paul Dano’s voice is exceptional in this.
  • While not in the film, Channing Tatum served as one of the producers.
  • The movie poster and film’s description were both intriguing enough that I wanted to watch the movie.
  • One of these days, I’d love to be in a zero gravity space, somehow.
  • The actress who plays Anna is Adam Sandler’s real-life daughter.  She starred in his popular movie last year called You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.  I loved it!  Adam Sandler’s entire family was in it!  Check out my review of it!
  • Good special effects.
  • As much as I don’t like spiders, I would be thrilled to be called “skinny human” by one.  Ha ha
  • Hazelnut spread, like Nutella, is beloved worldwide, as well as across the universe.   Ha ha

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There’s no explanation about how the voice is that the spaceman hears.
  • The astronaut’s name is Jakub, supposedly from Chekhovian, yet Adam Sandler’s accent is very American.
  • Why does it have to be a spider????!!!!  ICK!!!  Why couldn’t Hanush have been a cute hamster or something?  Spider hug.  Sweet, but still ick.
  • We see a lot of flashbacks that don’t always give us more information.
  • The wife seemed super self-absorbed and selfish.
  • It’s extremely slow-moving.  Some people will tire while waiting for something to “happen.”
  • Some viewers won’t like the ambiguous ending.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Some profanity, including F-bombs
  • We see a shirtless Adam Sandler.
  • Kids will be bored.

THEMES:

  • Loneliness
  • Ambition
  • Sacrifice
  • Family
  • Absence in marriage
  • Silence
  • Time
  • Miscarriage
  • Emotions
