Strange World movie review

MOVIE TITLE:     Strange World

This cute Disney animation was initially released in theaters only, but is now available on Disney+.

RATING:    PG

LENGTH:      1 hour 42 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:     B-

IN A NUTSHELL:

Disney seems to be trying too hard to be woke in all of their movies now.  In this one, we see the most diversity we’ve ever seen in a Disney movie, including a variety of ethnicities and gender identities.  While diversity and inclusion are important, audiences say this movie is more focused on that than in delivering a truly memorable story.

The colorful animation was co-directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen.  Qui Nguyen was also the writer.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • The talented voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Alan Tudyk, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, Lucy Liu, and Abraham Benrubi.
  • Fun fact:  Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal played father son in the movie The Day After Tomorrow in 2004.  I really like both actors.
  • There are plenty of cute and creative creatures to meet set in beautiful environments.
  • Fascinating and detailed world building.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • It’s more dramatic than funny.
  • The characters wander around a fantasy land, but many viewers are complaining that nothing important really happens or matters.
  • The blobby characters are cute but also non-descript, appearing to be a merchandising grab.
  • Ultimately, the most common reaction after watching the movie is “Meh.”  It’s not a bad movie; it’s just not a great movie.  We expect so much more from Disney.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • People and creatures are in dangerous situations.
  • No profanity
  • Animated violence
  • Family members constantly fight with one another
  • Kissing

THEMES:

  • Family
  • Parenting
  • Generational differences
  • Complicated father/son dynamics
  • Finding your vocation and place in the world
  • Acceptance
  • Environmentalism
  • Legacy
  • Working together
  • Resourcefulness

FUNNY LINES:

  • Caspian:  Mr. Clade, I’m a huge fan!

      Searched Clade: Oh, thank you.

Caspian: …of your dad.  Could you please forge his signature?

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “You don’t know what you want.”  –  Searcher Clade  (Jake Gyllenhaal)       “I know I don’t want to be you!” – Ethan Clade  (Jaboukie Young-White)
