MOVIE TITLE:  The Hummingbird Project                              On DVD & streaming June 25, 2019

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  1 hour, 51 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:  B+

IN A NUTSHELL:

This financial crime drama premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was directed by Kim Nguyen.  It almost feels like a true high-tech story because it’s done so well.  It’s smart and darkly witty, packing a powerful and profound emotional punch you don’t expect.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Kids will be bored out of their minds.
  • Some profanity, including F-bombs.
  • A man is naked in a bathtub, but you don’t see any “private parts.”

THEMES:

  • “Own your freedom.” – Vincent Zaleski
  • Greed
  • Hope
  • Believing in your dreams and goals
  • Persistence

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Jesse Eisenberg is in his full-form awesomeness. He memorized the entire script before they even started filming.  He kind of plays the same character in every movie he does, but this movie needed him and that character.
  • I didn’t even recognize Alexander Skarsgard!  He has never played a role like this before and was absolutely fantastic.  Hopefully, he’ll earn an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for this code-crunching character.
  • Salma Hayak is always fun to watch.
  • The FBI scene was hilarious.
  • The last scene was perfectly poetic.
  • Some dark, comedic moments.
  • People will, undoubtedly, compare this movie to The Big Short but they are more like cousins than sisters.
  • Some beautiful camera angles with a clever perspective.
  • Entertaining dialogue.
  • The trailer is intriguing.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • There’s only one mention of a hummingbird that explains why the film has the title it does.  I loved the last scene, but I would have loved it if a hummingbird had flown by.  Just sayin.
  • It takes a few minutes to understand what’s going on, especially if you haven’t seen the trailer.
  • It’s too bad the marketing for this film flew under the radar for most people.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “Excessive Force! Excessive Force!” – Anton Zaleski (Alexander Skarsgard)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “You could make billions.” – Eva (Salma Hayek)       “It’s all fake.” – Anton Zaleski (Alexander Skarsgard)
  • “It’s not the destination, but it’s the people we meet and the lessons we learn.” – Mark Vega (Michael Mando)
  • “What would we do when we owned Wall-Street?” – Vincent Zaleski (Jesse Eisenberg)           “We burn it to the ground.” – Anton
