The Slumber Party movie review

MOVIE TITLE:     The Slumber Party

This goofy coming-of-age movie is now available to stream on Disney+ channel.

RATING:    TV-PG

LENGTH:      1 hour 22 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  B-

IN A NUTSHELL:

Follow the hilarious consequences of a sleepover birthday party hypnotism that went wrong as Megan, Page, and Veronica, wake up with no memories of the night before.  Shenanigans ensue, friendships are formed, and lessons are learned.

The film was directed by Veronica Rodriguez, and written by Eydie Faye and Jen Malone.

The movie is loosely based on the novel “The Sleepover” by Jen Malone.  Some have said that it’s more like a teenage girl remake of the 2009 comedy The Hangover.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Funny, snarky dialogue and tons of crazy situations that are so ridiculous you’ll laugh.
  • Disney offers the “required” diverse cast of girls in this ensemble.  The young cast does a great job.  This is the acting debut of Alex Cooper Cohen, who plays Veronica in the film.  Other cast members include Darby Camp, Emmy Liu-Wang, Valentina Herrera, Dallas Liu, Ramon Jose Rodriguez, Paula Pell, Titus Burgess, and Caroline Valencia.
  • I love that Brian Grazer and Ron Howard were involved in the film as Executive Producers.  They have been around for decades and know how to make people laugh.
  • Keep watching during the final rolling credits for some more goofy scenes and a reveal of what really happened during the slumber party at night.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • As a mom, one of the lies I hate about the message “Live your best life” that movies tell kids is that there aren’t consequences or any consideration of how your actions might affect other people.
  • One of the girls is always super mean and derogatory to everyone.
  • It’s supposed to be really funny when the girls behave badly.
  • There are a LOT of over-acting, bad moments.
  • We hear a man throw up.  Bleh.
  • A lot of the dialogue is cliched and painful.
  • There are some bad green-screen moments.
  • There are a lot of over-acting moments that made some of the characters seem more like cartoon characters than real people.  Then again, all of the characters in the movie The Hangover are ridiculous too.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Those most interested in this movie will be Tweens.
  • Let this be a cautionary tale for you to pay more attention to your kids!  Where are they right now?
  • One of the girls has 2 gay dads.
  • No profanity. An old lady yells “Dangit!”, which made me laugh because that’s how I swear too.
  • Bullying
  • A young boy wears an earring.
  • Teens kiss.
  • A girl puts two tampons up her nose.
  • You might need to talk to young kids about hypnotism.  A Grad student tried it once on me when I was in college, but it didn’t work.  We just sat there, staring at each other in awkward silence.  ha ha
