MOVIE TITLE:     Adeline

This lovely movie is now available on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV streaming for rent or purchase.

RATING:  PG

LENGTH:      1 hour 37 minutes

MOVIE REVIEW MOM GRADE:  B+

IN A NUTSHELL:

A small Midwestern community becomes the epicenter for miracles when a mysterious woman brings a healing horse to town.

It’s a sweet, clean, family-friendly movie of faith, hope, and healing.  What makes it even more special is that it’s based on a true story.

THINGS I LIKED:

  • Most of the actors will be completely unfamiliar to viewers.  If you were a Dukes of Hazzard fan though, you’ll recognize John Schneider as the Sheriff in this story.
  • I liked that the characters in the movie looked like real people and not celebrity movie stars
  • Beautiful cinematography.
  • I lived in Georgia and experienced several tornadoes but not quite to the dramatic extent seen in this movie.  It’s pretty scary.
  • I love that a sweet Amish family came into town to offer help after the tornado.  What a generous community and giving tradition they have created.
  • Animals really can heal our souls.
  • During the rolling credits, we get to see photos of the real Adeline and some of the events shown in the movie.
  • Lovely musical score.
  • There is some light humor, mostly centered on the busy bee lady who is the town’s gossip.
  • The movie spotlights Native American wisdom.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the dialogue is cheesy, stiff, and cliched.  I always want Christian movies to do well so that we have clean, profanity-free movies to choose from for our family viewing.  Unfortunately, many of them look very amateur and are super predictable.  This one is better than many I’ve seen, yet it still has a few cringe moments.
  • While many of the actors are naturals, there are still a few bad acting moments.
  • I hate seeing Christians portrayed as simplistic or hypocrites in movies.  There are hypocrites in EVERY religion.
  • I’m Christian and believe in miracles.  I worry, though, that some will believe that horses are the only ones who can heal them or that they can heal everything and everyone after watching this movie.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • A girl burns down buildings.
  • Children are seen in wheelchairs.
  • An autistic child is seen.
  • People are in perilous situations due to a tornado.
  • No profanity.

THEMES:

  • Kindness
  • Healing
  • Faith
  • Being mad at God
  • Community
  • Supporting one another
  • Seeing the good in each other
  • The power of horses
  • Challenges bring growth and insight

FUNNY LINES:

None, really.

INTERESTING LINES:
