Boss Level movie review

MOVIE TITLE:  Boss Level

Available on Hulu in 2021

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  1 hour, 40 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B+

IN A NUTSHELL:

I’ve always gotten a kick out of time-loop movies.  This action, sci-fi thriller feels like a Deadpool  version of Groundhog Day .  Directed by Joe Carnahan, this action flick is entertaining enough for a fun Covid distraction during quarantine.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • Lots of profanity, including F-bombs
  • Tons of violence
  • Tons of destruction
  • Bloody, gruesome deaths
  • Lots of alcohol, smoking
  • Incredibly high body count

THEMES:

  • “The past is to be left behind.  It’s designed for us so we can live and we learn from it.” – Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo)
  • Persistence
  • Family
  • Parenting

THINGS I LIKED:

  • I can’t believe Frank Grillo’s abs are real!  Eric Etebari plays Roy 2 and really does look like him, except taller.
  • I love Naomi Watts in every movie she’s in.
  • The cast includes Mel Gibson, Naomi Watts, Frank Grillo, Ken Jeong, and Will Sasso to name just a few.
  • Great music soundtrack
  • Lots of references to other movies like Taken and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.
  • I liked the intriguing way the movie ended.  Everyone loves a happy ending, but I think movies that leave with an ending that’s open to interpretation can be extremely effective and great fodder for conversation.
  • You’ll learn a little bit about the legend of Osiris.
  • With a name like Boss Level, I’m glad they incorporated some video games into the story.
  • There is a good amount of humor to balance out the drama and intense action.  Some of the dialogue is pretty amusing.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • Some of the explosions look super fake.
  • Chase scene with a minivan.  ha ha
  • It does get a bit repetitive.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “I’m never ever getting my security deposit back.” – Roy Pulver  (Frank Grillo)
  • “Are you like that guy who has a particular set of skills?” –  kid
  • “I am Guan-Yin and Guan-Yin has done this.” – Guan-Yin    (Selina Lo)
  • “I smell muffins. Do you smell muffins?” –   Brett   (Will Sasso)
