Chick Fight movie review

MOVIE TITLE:   CHICK FIGHT

RATING:  R

LENGTH:  1 hour, 37 minutes

Movie Review Mom GRADE:   B+

IN A NUTSHELL:

I’m retitling this “Fight Club With Estrogen.”   REDBOX Entertainment premiered Chick Fight back in November, but I never had a chance to watch it.  Recently several of my subscribers asked if I would watch it and do a review, so here we go!

While the movie is funny and celebrates sisterhood (sort of), it can also be extremely offensive to some viewers, so check out my tips for parents because they apply to sensitive/conservative moviegoers too.

TIPS FOR PARENTS:

  • You see a woman sitting on the toilet.
  • You hear sounds of aggressive lovemaking from another room.
  • Tons of crude conversations and gestures
  • Lots of  talk about “sexual fluidity”
  • Lots of profanity
  • Homosexuality displayed and discussed in graphic terms
  • Two women smoke a joint
  • Lots of alcohol and drunken behavior
  • Violence with blood
  • Cleavage and skimpy outfits
  • A woman flips the bird
  • Irresponsible behavior
  • Terrible role models for girls

THEMES:

  • Face who you are and what you’re capable of.
  • Always show up
  • Family
  • Anger
  • Friendship
  • Sisterhood
  • “The only thing that separates fear from bravery is one small step.” –  Jack Murphy   (Alec Baldwin)
  • “Never back down.” –   Jack Murphy   (Alec Baldwin)

THINGS I LIKED:

    • There’s something about Malin Akerman that I’ve always liked.  Her character in this film is also likable and charming, winning you over almost immediately.
    • Bella Thorne is fierce and looks amazing.  If you enjoy her performance in this, you might be interested in another movie of hers that came out recently: Girl.  Click here to see my movie review of GIRL.  It’s a very different kind of film from this one but also with an excellent performance by Bella Thorne.
    • I’ve never seen Dulce Sloan’s stand-up comedy, but I can imagine that it’s super crude.  She was really funny in this movie and a great side-kick character that offered a balanced counterpoint to Malin Akerman’s character.
    • Alec Baldwin does comedy and drama equally well.  One of my favorite movies of his is The Hunt for Red October
  • Really good slow-motion sequences and lots of them.
  • Beautiful beach town vibe.  They filmed the movie in Puerto Rico.
  • Keep watching during the rolling credits at the end for a few minutes.

THINGS I DIDN’T LIKE:

  • This is a different take on female empowerment that, honestly, saddened me.  Instead of just helping women feel more confident, fighting appeared to turn some of them into mean, violent men.  There is no respect for soft, gentle, loving, and kind women.  Rare are the movies that value virtue anymore.  Margaret D. Nadault delivered an excellent speech many years ago entitled “The Joy of Womanhood” that I’ve never forgotten.  She boldly stated,  “The world has enough women who are tough; we need women who are tender. There are enough women who are coarse; we need women who are kind. There are enough women who are rude; we need women who are refined. We have enough women of fame and fortune; we need more women of faith. We have enough greed; we need more goodness. We have enough vanity; we need more virtue. We have enough popularity; we need more purity.”
  • I didn’t feel any chemistry between the romantic leads. The romance factor is zero.
  • Super predictable.
  • Some terrible dialogue.

FUNNY LINES:

  • “Do you trust me?” – Charleen   (Dulce Sloan)   “Of course not!” – Anna  (Malin Akerman)   “Good instincts.” – Charleen
  • “She’s like Neo in The Matrix – Anna  (Malin Akerman)
  • “Walk away Mom Jeans.” –   Olivia   (Bella Thorne)
  • “This is the wrong time for a period joke!” –  Bear  (Fortune Feimster)

INTERESTING LINES:

  • “Underneath this big hairy chest is an even bigger heart.” – Bear  (Fortune Feimster)
